Drivers Side Window Switch LED

So got to the LED and am stuck i am new to the whole LED scene so sorry i f i ask a stupid question. :facepalm

I have my 3mm LED i wanna switch out to blue but my question is.


Do i just snip the ends of the LED and solder the new one on? Heres a picture​

 

Anyone know how to do it ??

 

If it was me I would desolder the old one and solder the new one in its place and then test before re-assy.

 

wouldnt that require somehow taking the plastic backing off to get to the bottom??

 

Yup. Use flux to get the old solder off, then heat each lead and pull individually.

 

Once you get down to the board it will all make more sense. Completely remove the board from whatever is holding it.

 

im not sure if the board comes off, have you ever done this?

 

no, hes talkning about getting down to just the PC board. you desolder/resolder the LED at the pads on the PC board...which appear to be on the backside of that pic

 

Nope, my truck doesn't have power windows. I have done all the others in the truck and generally know what I am talking about however.

It should be very simple:

Isolate the board- remove it entirely from everything else so you can access the back

Use flux to remove solder from the back of the board which is holding the LED in

Heat one connection at a time and pull from the front to remove from the board.

Insert new LED in the correct orientation

Solder both contacts

Reassemble



If you can't figure it out I suggest stopping while you are ahead.

Remember LED's are not bulbs they have polarity, following diagram should explain everything:

I did that same mod and all I did was carefully about halfway down I cut both metal prongs. Then I took my new LED, that I want to soder on and I measured out the length to match the old LED's height, then I cut the new ones legs. I then soldered the new LED's legs (that I cut) on top of the old LED's legs (that I also cut). I just soldered it on then took it out to the truck, hooked it up and checked to make sure it was working. Or you could take the plastic back off and then de-solder the old LED but eh, more work for same outcome. Your choice!

^ wow, WAY too much work, plus you run into heating up the actual soldered joint on the board and causing that one to come loose....

just remove the old one properly and solder in the new one! really not that hard.

 

you might be right haha. thats for all the help anyways and i didnt mean to say it thought you didnt know what you were doing i was just asking if you have done it before lol sorry about that.

i felt like i was gonna break the plastic peice off the pc board.
