Heads up, building or maintaining a campfire or stove except in designated recreation areas is prohibited effective today, Friday August 16, 2019. If you dont know what constitutes a designated recreation area, might want to check out the list on the Plumas NF website for exhibit A, a list of campgrounds. I was going to go out soon myself up the road a few miles to get Repo out, but will have to hit a CG now.

It’s effective on the 18th. Per the Forest order.

Ah, my old eyes saw 16. Thank you for clarifying. I still can't get out until next week, volunteering for the Running With The Bears marathon.

    QUINCY, Calif. –
Fire restrictions are effective August 18, 2019, within the Plumas National Forest (public land) according to Chris Carlton, Forest Supervisor.

    Fire Restrictions

    1. You may not build, maintain, attend, or use a fire, campfire or stove fire except in the Designated Recreation Sites in Attachment A of the PNF Forest Order #05-11-00-19-04 even with a valid California Campfire Permit.
      1. Note: campfires must be built within agency installed & approved fire pits.
However, lanterns and portable stoves (includes propane campfire units) using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel are allowed as long as the forest visitor has a valid California Campfire Permit () or from Forest Service offices during normal business hours (M-F; 8-4:30).

    1. No smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle, building, Designated Recreation Site (Attachment A), or while stopped in an area at least 3 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.
    2. No welding or operating acetylene or other torch with an open flame.
Some people may be exempt from these restrictions if they have been specifically allowed by the Forest Service via a permit or approved plan of operations or if they are a member of any Federal, State, local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of official duty.

Persons with a Special Use Permit from the Forest Service for a recreation residence on the PNF are exempt from #1 & 2 above, while they are at their recreation residence.

Information about private land fire restrictions (regulated by the CA Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)) may be found at: http://www.calfire.ca.gov .

Love the "However" stuff. Guess I'm still good to go with my Campfire permit. Go thru this each year. Have even seen a couple local guys build a big campfire, even after a FS Seasonal worker came thru and spoke to everyone at Ross Camp CG above Plumas Eureka SP.

Do you cook on a wood fire or something? What would keep you from going out?

Sorry, my bad. Initially didnt read down to the "however" stuff, so can fire up my old lanterns or stoves. Gets this dry, I leave firewood at home, not one who has to have a fire to get out. I don't have a wood cookstove since conditions change in Kalifornia, short season to use a woodstove to cook on, when wood finally dries out. Mostly would be used when backpacking.

Gotcha. Yeah I don't think I've ever seen a fire restriction that prevents use of a gas stove but anything is possible I suppose. They've banned charcoal bbq in Tahoe this summer. I'm not a big fan of camp fires except in the winter anyway. I know people that can't seem to camp without them but for me I'd rather not even bother with it. Not worth the hassle and having everything smell like smoke after!

I've read off the Coleman Collectors Forum, where a Park or official CG in California only allows a profane(propane) stove to be used during high fire danger. Crazy.
If dry camping, unless it is Fall or early Spring, I won't have a campfire unless I'm by water, as I may not have enough water to douse it good.

I enjoy them if I am going to be in the same place for a few days but otherwise avoid them.

When backpacking, if wood is plentiful I may have a fire. If not, it turns into work gathering wood, then the need to dump water on it in the morning. Hard if water is scarce.

Restrictions have been lifted, still need a Campfire permit, even to use a stove. Out last night, using all kerosene lanterns, stoves.
