Just signed up. First time poster.

Been loving my 2010 Taco. Got about 190k miles, one owner. Only done the battery and wheel bearings. I'm jealous of these new 2019, 2020 Tacos.

I really want to upgrade but my current truck isn't giving me a reason other than the dated cab. I love the 4.0L. It keeps on giving but gas mileage is not the best. I'm weary about the new motor and tranny.

Anybody have some recent insight about upgrading from gen 2 to gen 3?

    Pros? Cons?

I have driven the Gen 3’s.

Going to keep my Gen2 until something better than the current Gen3 comes out.
Not bashing current Gen3’s. They just aren’t “better” enough for me justify getting rid on my current truck.

Lol, I don’t even use my truck to its full potential now.

If you like your truck, keep it. That would make the most financial sense.

But we are human and this is America and if you want a shiny new truck, go for it. I would strongly suggest test driving one before buying it. I happen to absolutely love my truck and don’t get the hate that a lot have on the third gens. Yes, I also have owned a 2nd and first gen too.

Your saying your mpgs aren’t the best? I get a average of 18-20 with duratracs. Maybe you should clean the MAF,throttle body and change the plugs new air filter also. Ive driven a two third gens one auto and one manual. If i was going to trade in id get the stick. The auto is not as good as the 2nd gens JMO

Wait at least six months into the 2020 run to see if Toyota fixed the shift points.

All very good points. Appreciate the feedback.

Somebody asked about mpgs. I run duratracs as well. Change air filter every 6 months. I'm pretty meticulous on maintenance. It may also be because of altitude (Colorado). I think one of the downfalls to me is that the gas tank is too small. If I ever get to 300 miles in a tank it's like I won the lottery for the week. Lol.

If I drive my 11 like I should I'll get 400 miles per tank mind you I'm in the middle of nowhere western Maine. Because the last two Tacomas had 300K on them I'm in no rush to sell the 11.

If it's paid for and not giving you a problem keep it. The 4.0 is not a very powerful motor nor does it get good mileage (I get about 16MPG with a 4.0 manual and 265-70-17 P rated BFG's). I believe the third gen has a little more HP but again if you own yours outright and you have no issues with it keep it. If you get a 4wd you are not going to get good mileage any way.

My 2017 sucked on the freeway. Forget using cruise control. If they fixed that, I will consider the 3rd gen again but it’ll likely be another year before I do.

So you haven't felt the motor and tranny are finicky?

I will definitely drive one before I upgrade, but those two items seem to be the most that I've heard about. Including the maintenance guys at the Dealership.

I have a nicely built up 2006 with 227k miles. I can't bring myself to buy a 3rd Gen. I've driven my neighbors truck, and I just like the Second Gen Better. My 2006 is my DD, and my off-roading camping truck. No car Payment. I've had zero issues with it. I've even gotten the green light from my wife to get a new one!!!! But I just can't do it. IMHO, the Second Gen is the best gen to date.

I'll put it this way...the Third Gen is just not BETTER enough to upgrade. Kind of like an Apple iPhone 6 to a 7 or whatever...you get my drift. Plus, several buddies that have done the switch to a 3rd Gen, more than half have said they prefer their older Second Gen. There are some quirks they've experienced...like leaking rear diff, AC compressor stopped working...it shifts weird....things that Toyota is getting away from.

Agree, if you have no reason to then why do it? No payment no brainer!

I had to dump my 2013 Baja 6 speed because of back issues (need to go auto). The Baja was my favorite of 6 Tacoma’s but have no issues or complaints with my 16.

It’s a DD, camping, off-road so it’s been cross country 3 times and only had slight lag packed up going up the Rocky’s but nothing substantial vs my Baja and 07 Off road. It’s all how you drive just my opinion.

I own a 2010 and have driven a couple 3rd gens and I personally prefer mine. I found the 3rd gen motor to not have the same low rpm power as the 2nd gen or maybe some sort of lack in throttle response. I'm also likely to be a little biased towards my 2nd gen cuz it's my baby

Mine is not a 4wd, it’s a 2013 prerunner, but I usually get around 19-20 mpg with about half highway and half city.
