Privacy Glass UV Protection; Toyota's answer

This morning I emailed toyota asking them what, if any, does the factory privacy glass have for UV blocking %. Suprisingly they answered me today by the time I got home from work. Kudos for that. Check out their answer.
Guess this mean I'll be tinting over the factory privacy glass with a very very light film. I also find it odd, how the doors have different UV blockage than the rear window.

The ultraviolet reduction rate for factory rear privacy glass on the rear doors of the 2009 Tacoma Double Cab is approximately 80%. The reduction rate of the back window is approximately 18%..

 

i've always wondered what they were myself. good to know.

 

I'm guessing the back window has less UV blockage b/c it's cheaper/thinner glass. I'm putting 70% Solar Gard "Supreme" over the rear doors and rear window, and 35% Solar Gard "HP Supreme" on the front doors. Also helps in an accident, keeps the windows shards together. and it makes breaking in.. bashing a window a lot harder.

 

i put 20% all the way around on mine... I wonder what the UV reduction rate is now?

Blocking UV rays for all window tint that is decent is >99%. Cheap tint is 98%. Blocking UV rays has nothing to do with how dark you make it, that deals with "solar energy rejected"; making it cooler. UV rays is what causes damage, fading and skin cancer etc. Problem I have with the factory 80% and 18% is the issue when you are sitting in the truck, mainly the rear, your eyes dialate b/c it's dark(er). Problem is you making your eyes dialate w/out having 100% UV protection. So it's like wearing a pair of old school cheap sun glasses, they did more harm to your eyes than good. Between the UV, security, and safety... I'm just doing the whole truck.

 

I've been meaning to do the rear window since the baby faces that way. I need to get that done.

EDIT: I have learned new information about the glass and will update this post very soon.

Here it is. There are many types of glass and they're all listed in the table below.

 

i wish i could match the back > front with 20% but it's "illegal" here in MS to run anything on the front darker than 28%(light pen rate)

i've never been pulled over or heard of anyone for dark tint(20%) but it's hard and a headache to get an inspection sticker ever year.

Ok, reviving this thread 6 years later . Does anyone know if the data is still the same for the 3rd Gen Tacoma?

 

I would not count on it, contact Toyota, they will tell you. That's what I did back in September, 2010. Lol
