There is a back up manual pull to inflate those PFDs but you have to be clear minded enough in a shitty situation to actually use it if the auto didn't work. I'm with you KISS with a pfd. I took a dump white water kayaking and that shit ain't no joke. Even with a good pfd I got shoved under the water a ton and it was hard at times to get my bearings getting tumbled around.
Personally I wouldn't do an auto in a yak. But I fish rivers and some in the ocean and end up getting splashed enough I think would set it off. Personally if I'm in my lakes I don't really wear one or keep the front unzipped.

Oh and now that Hobie's mirage drive patent has eclipsed other companies are using it and improving it imo. Also there are some other really good peddle yaks out there for a lot less. Hobie's are really good yaks just overpriced for what they are and against their competitors which are just as good. It's still a really awesome yak though.

You checked this place out yet ? Shouldn't be too far from ya ! It's out in the country and you usually have the place to yourself on a sunday.

I had one of those pelicans for about a month and returned it. The drive is no where near as smooth as hobie and they dont hold nearly as much weight. I'm pretty sure I'm getting the new hobie with the steerable drive system if I can ever slow down my truck parts addiction. I am a very big guy so opinion is biased around that. I am sure the pelicans are adequate for normal sized folks.

Woah, that’s only an hour from me! Weather is looking ominous otherwise I’d go today. Maybe a week day trip is in order.

This one may be even closer. Also a great place to hike when its cooler. Bugs can get really bad. They may close the gates at dark as well. O and watch out for bears:D:eek:

I swam in high school too, was even the team captain! I swam competitively for about 15 years... then quit after high school and literally became twice the man I used to be!

The auto inflate PFDs have a manual RIP cord to offset the auto sensing. So of it didn't inflate when you hit the water, you could pull the backup cord.

I hadn't really thought of splashing. I would hope they aren't that sensitive, but it is definitely food for thought!

Yeah. The pelican catch 130 HD is a prime example, coming in at a third the price if the Hobie. Know of any other brands using the technology I should look at?

I noticed that. They only carry 425 lbs compared to hobies 600 lbs. I am about 280, so that doesn't leave much room for gear...or a battery for a trolling motor.

I had heard the mirage drive is still the best, while other companies may have the tech, they haven't smoothed it out like Hobie has...like the tech and patent paperwork didn't reveal all the secrets to it.

Paddle is awesome but gets hot if I’m not holding it for a bit. Cools off fast at least. Lake was great, one other boat there. Hot AF though so I left after an hour.

Water wasn’t very clear and I managed to hit a trunk hiding right under the water. Damn near made me flop!! Glad I was sitting properly, so I regained my balance.

I am not sure I think there are some smaller companies with it.
You're probably right also they probably have patents out for the newer stuff and things that make them even more efficient.

I'm not much of a peddle boat person or adding a trolling motor. I'm a bit of a purist and like to paddle.
