The extra cost is minimal, at that point it's just a buddy and a case of beer if you're lucky like that, the most cost comes from tires, mine are due for replacement soon

PS reg cabs with big tires are awesome

Can't go wrong with pizza cutters, I liked my truck on the 265s, stock gears rolled it along great, just wasn't enough you know lol, I have this need to travel to far off places and do trails lol

    Great thread. Thanks TYetti.

I'm geared on 88's and 33's currently (feels great in SoCal hills) and I feel as if it might even be under geared if I were to go to 35's. I'm ok with taking a BFH to pinch welds and firewalls (already have the CMC done), but what I'm oddly NOT ok with, is a snorkel. With 35's pretty much meaning I need to remove the fender liner, I wouldn't want my intake to be exposed.

I just don't know how to get over that damn snorkel. Halp. Talk to me goose.

There are several variations of the snorkel vancity4x cut a hole in the firewall and routed the intake into the cab, the Aussie style snorkels appeal the some, in my opinion the airflow snorkel is the best looking on the market, the I also can't get over the whale penis that arb put out. I ran my truck in NorCal and a little bit into SoCal dropping 3rd is just part of that deal. But a snorkel is a must imo ask babytaco how dirt affects the engine

That's cool, if that's what you wanna do, just remember with smaller tires and low gearing you'll be running much higher Rpms, if you're just bombing around the city it would be ok, but longwr hauls on the highway will be limiting

How did you like the 295s? I am thinking about going to them the next time I get tires.

Theyve been good, but mine are super heavy at 66lbs per tire. Im looking for something lighter next time around. Also, the 295s rub everything so prepare to cut and clearance

My tc ucas are on their second rebuild, I get about 2.5 years per rebuild, keep in mind I run hard, and it is not a daily driver. However TC is great quality

holy jesus, finally someone who gets the 2.7 life!

Question: 4.88 being that "compromise" is based off a 2nd gen correct? Im a 3rd gen AC 2.7 5spd on 285s right now and stock gearing. It's so-so on road, but offroad its a joke. 4.88's would be perfect, BUT I plan to go 315s. Do you feel 4.88's would be enough with 35s on a heavier 3rd gen? I don't want to roast my clutch like I have to now (hence why I stopped offorading and taking it easy on her until regear). I'm fine running 3k RPM on the freeway going ~75 because that's what I do now in 4th because 5th would be lugging the 2.7 wayyyy too bad aha.

I know @Diablo169 had 4.88's + 35s on his 3rd gen AC, curious what he thinks as well. I just don't want to regret not having 5.29s, but 4.88 indeed gives me options if I ever downsize to 33's in the future.

Yes sorry all my observations are based on the second gen Tacoma. I mean the 3rd gen AC is what 300lbs more ish. I don't see that making a huge difference. I'm at the point now where I need to jump to 5.29s my truck in full trip trim is just too much for the truck in 2wd if I air down. Actually aired down for the Forrest service road on the weekend I stalled it twice. I also plan for 37s sooo yaaa. Regear is an expense for sure so you wanna be sure. It really depends on your wheeling and driving style. If you're already having issues with the 33s (I'm assuming you have bumpers, skids etc) personally I didn't loose the use of 5th until I went to 35s and it was only a week of that nonsense. I regeared pretty quick. If your not able to use 5th with only 33s I'd say go for it and do the 5.29s

I can use 5th, you can just feel the 2.7 straining badly on the freeway considering its around 2200rpm at 75+. My MPG is actually worse in 5th than 4th because throttle is wide open. No skids/bumpers or added weight yet.

Yeah 5.29s feel like they'd be the best fit for performance when I never drive over 75 on the freeway anyways. According to GrimJeeper, with 5.29 + 315, ill be at 74mph at 3k. 4.88 with 33's is spot on though.

    I’m manual.

2.7 is made to rev a little. She’s fine at 3k on the freeway. Easiest running a truck sees.
