The 4Runner will feel more sluggish than the Tacoma. It's a heavy large vehicle. I had a 2017 for a brief time. Just another Toyota dog....But hey reliability and resale!!!

Vehicles that are heavily discounted have poor resale value. I wanted to get rid of my 3rd gen so I traded it straight across for a used 2017 4Runner SR5 just trading keys at the Honda dealer where I leased the wife's CRV every few years.

They thought the Tacoma would sell before the 4Runner....My Ford dealer wrote me a check for $36500 for the 4Runner. Then I bought the Ranger in a separate deal. I wanted to ensure I was getting decent money for the 4Runner so I asked for a check and separate deals.

The 4Runner is nice but it is big and the 4.0 is sluggish. MPGs are not economical

Test drive and test drive..I don't think many people actually put their vehicles through an all-encompassing test drive I know I didn't when I bought my 3rd Gen blindly because it was a Tacoma.....Lesson learned. I test drove the Ford for 45 minutes before stroking a check.

I have a DCLB, but was in a rental T4R for 30 days waiting on my diff gasket to show up from Jerkmanistan. It had PLENTY of ooomph in it.

Not gonna talk you out of it. You know your needs... I actually just traded my Tacoma for a Highlander over the weekend. I've been considering trading for another truck. Overall I loved my Tacoma. But family needs and giving the wife the chance to finally have the new vehicle of her dreams made me go ahead and trade it for a Highlander XLE AWD. I must say I'm very impressed by it. Great, comfortable ride... Fold the seats down and I've probably got more room than I did in my SB Tacoma - just can't haul things like that deer mentioned. But I will work around that for now. Put 300 miles on it over the weekend and so far nothing I dislike about it. I will take over her '13 Camry SE for now and down the road possibly get another Tacoma.

    In my opinion.......

Pros to Tacoma: Bed, looks both inside and out, cost, fuel economy slightly better, more advanced interior, more features
Cons to Tacoma: Quirky (i.e. rear diff howl, decel vibes, etc.), seating position/comfort hit or miss for some people, cabin can feel a bit cramped on long road trips

Pros to 4runner: Softer ride quality better suited for road trips, more spacious interior, fewer design quirks than Tacoma (see cons for Tacoma)
Cons to 4runner: More expensive (and fewer incentives to boot), automatic transmission not very good in hilly conditions, fuel economy, no bed, interior and exterior styling inferior to Tacoma, outdated for the price

Bottom line, it really depends on what you're looking for. I don't believe the 4runner is the holy grail of vehicles as many seem to suggest.

    My suggestion:

Spend two weeks without using your bed, at all, ever. Put everything you need to move in your cab with you. Then decide.

I don't have a thin skin. I can take all the crap slung my way. It's only a Vehicle Forum, not a church. That said I am still here and will be until the next redesigned Tacoma. Then I will start shopping again between the "new" Ranger and the Tacoma. Maybe a Raptor when as usual Ford will deliver some $6000 discounts, Probably more on the Raptor. Until then I will respond to that which I know of.

.......I guess. But after a 3rd Gen Tacoma, even the 4Runner felt more nimble and quick, Not Ranger quick though

I came from a T4R to a Taco. No regrets, I needed the extra bed space. Save your money and get a topper instead, is a better decision imho!

Yeah, just came back from the dealer. They only had two limiteds which were fresh off the transport truck so they were covered in plastic and couldn't be driven yet. I sat in the drivers seat and the seating position is admittedly way better than the Tacoma but other than that the interior was not as big as I was thinking it'd be.

Still need to drive one but just checking out the 4Runner made me immediately appreciate my Tacoma more, funny how that works huh?

I’ve also recently grown interested in the 4Runner. Tried to talk my wife into trading her Camry for a 4Runner, but she won’t budge.

I used to have a Tacoma, got two large dogs so traded in for a 4runner. The 4runner is great for dogs in the back, but if I didn’t have two large dogs I probably would just go for the Tacoma for the bed and it can still hold 5 people (more cramped than the Tacoma though) I missed the truck bed for hauling things so now I bought another Tacoma but kept the 4Runner too. Best of both worlds and I use what one I need for the day. The dogs can still get in the back of the Tacoma but they much prefer the roominess of the 4Runner so for long trips we load up in the 4runner.

I'm desperately trying to get my wife out of her Prius into a Camry Hybrid. She still wants her hybrid, but after 4 years of rolling around in my truck even she's realizing her Prius is too low.

I would love to get her into a T4R or even a RAV-4, but she doesn't like SUVs. I need better hypnosis techniques...

Check the measurements. The interiors on the 4Runner and Tacoma are essentially the same.
