Also, we are huge fisherman. And I heard this is the place to be for that. Much different than our fishing up north but we'd love to try!

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You're early for Reds but the blues, sharks, and spanish mackerels are running. I can't help you with the camping as I usually rent a house. Cape Point is open for driving and you have to take the ferry to Ocracoke.

Just to be clear - there are two campgrounds on the OBX with "Frisco" in their name's and to further confuse things, they're both located in/near the town of Frisco. Just plain "Frisco" is on the east side of Hwy 12 and is the National Park Service campground while "Frisco Woods" is a commercial cg on the west side of 12. The NPS is our favorite and we think the best campground, public or private, on the Outer Banks. Its located among the dunes and many sites are separated by vegetation which provides decent privacy.

The Frisco campground is an oval with six spokes. Campsites are located on either side of the main loop (P) and each of the crossing roads (A-F). Restrooms with flush johns are on each spoke except "F". Cold water showers (really not that bad as hot as its been) are next to each rest room as is a potable water faucet.

You will not have any problem finding a site as it fills only on Holiday weekends. For us (small trailer), the most desirable spots are the odd numbers sites on the inside of the "P" loop between P51 and P61. P68 is also a good one with a great view of the ocean unless some bozo decides to take the small pull through directly across from it. You can also catch a bit of a water view from A10 and A12.

Beach access via Ramp 49 is available at the entrance to the campground. You will need a permit to drive on the shore - I think a ten day sticker is $50 and its good on any of the Park Service beaches (including Ocracoke). Pay attention to any fenced areas for turtle or bird nesting - you will be ticketed if you cross into these. If you get a permit, don't overlook the sound side access roads. Most of these have room for only a couple of vehicles and there's a good chance you'll have the water to yourselves.

Several good restaurant is the Buxton / Hatteras area. Diamond Shoals seems to have consistently good seafood.

If you're into history, the outdoor drama The Lost Colony and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site are pretty good. In fact, the whole Manteo / Nags Head area (Sixty miles north of Frisco, You'll pass through there on your way in) is worth a day of tourist stuff but the southern end is where you want to stay. Be sure to take the free ferry from Hatteras over to Ocracoke.

Do not speed - local governments get a good bit of their revenue from traffic tickets.

    Have fun.

Just came from there. If you're sight-seeing, the Wright Bros Memorial and the Cape Hatteras lighthouse are both pretty cool.

I was not impressed with Diamond Shoals the last few times I ate there. The Sound Bar and Grill is good, just don't get the Prime Rib. There is a great view of the sound especially around sunset. Dinky's in Hatteras is also a great place to eat.

Thank you! We were also looking at Oregon Inlet Campground because there is mention of easy access of fishing? Any input on that?

Of the four NPS campgrounds, I'd rate Oregon Inlet third best ahead of Cape Point. We came up from Ocracoke through there on Sunday and caught really heavy rain from Columbia all the way back to Tarboro. If that storm hit the OBX, there should be a bumper crop of mosquitoes in a few days and that campground has an ongoing problem with standing water. I'd suggest driving through before signing up and paying for a site. If the skeeters are bad, I'd continue on down to Frisco. It may have bugs as well but they're seldom as bad there due to the hilly terrain.

The charter boats do run out of Oregon Inlet so if you'te think offshore fishing, it may be better to stay there. For surf fishing, I think you'd have better luck on the hook behind the Hatteras Light.

Haha remwmber I'm coming from Nh/ Maine. Our beaches are like jagged rocks and the water is 67* right now. The bar isn't that high. I'll have to check it all out!

Hope you enjoy your visit. I'm partial to our barrier islands but ya'll have some special coastline as well. We really enjoyed our time at Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia NP a few years back - the rocks add a new dimension to wave action. Please post back with your impressions - good and bad.

My internal clock knows that it's about time to head to the beach and I can feel the stoke building. Problem is, this year I pushed my week back to the last week of Sept, rather than the first week like it's been for the last 15 years. :bananadead:

Don’t you hate that? That has happened to me occasionally for various reasons and it always seems like that week the weather is fantastic and the fishing is incredible and I’m NOT THERE!! And some other jerk is catching MY FISH!

Check out Portsmouth Island for Fishing. Have to take a ferry over from Morris Marina. Great Red Drum fishing in early October.

Any truth to the rumors I've heard that the big reds may be arriving a little early this year?
