I have noticed one big difference between my CVT and my friend's Smittybilt. His gets fucked by the wind and mine holds steady even in pretty crazy gusts. However, I'm still not sure it's worth double the price lol...

I’m running a smittybilt rtt. I’ve had it for about 2 years. I love it. I’ve had it in all types of weather including relentless pouring rain all night with no leaking. I first had it on my jeep mounted to a rack. I could really feel it on the Jeep. Now it’s on my taco I’ve had it mounted to the roof rack as well as the bed rack. I cant even tell its there on the Tacoma in either location. I’ve been using the smittybilt awning also which I can’t recommend enough.

Same here. Had some serious storms come through where ground tents and canopies were being crushed. My CVT barely rippled. I was not even getting the popping and flapping I expected from getting battered by the window.

...[Well on our way, we soon arrived at] the Manning Bridge. A "half" suspension bridge, it was put into service in June 2018, replacing an earlier model that was built in 1934. Just as interesting as the bridge itself - at least in my opinion - is a rock on the north side of the river, which was ground down with some circular grinder - its face polished and gray, a stark contrast to the natural rock around it.

Check it out (and a lot more) in IDBDR Pt. 5 - (No More) Gold in Them There Hills

Since my cvt mt Shasta ripped twice a few weeks ago and they denied warranty, the plastic clip for one of the straps just snapped clean off in my hand. I’ve never been more disappointed in an expensive product in my life

id be frustrated too, but those are an easy fail point if the tent is stuffed and theres too much tension.

I swapped mine out to lashing straps and they've been holding great.

    Still frustrating though

I put a chain hoist in my garage so I can take it on and off fairly quickly by myself. If I had to leave it on all the time I probably would not have gotten it. For me, when I’m off on overnight hunting/fishing trips, it’s just been great. I’m getting too old to sleep on the ground. Too many critters walking around.

REI has some replacement ones that can screw in. I believe they are from Sea to Summit.

Or the lashing straps are good

I just picked up a cvt mt. Rainier tent and need some help on spacing it up a little higher on my prinsu. I am running a snug top shell and full prinsu racks on cab and shell. The rainier is 72” long so sticks over the cab a bit on my shortbed. Problem is the racks are the same height so when I mount it to the rear rack it is laying on a couple load bars on the front rack. I’d like to lift it up off the rack a bit so it’s not touching the front when the cab/bed flex. Is there a way people lift the tent up on the rack?

Not sure how much pressure you need to have on those straps, but this may work for you.

    Something like these may help:
    https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/us/front-runner-tent-mount-kit.html
    https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/us/front-runner-tent-mount-kit-tall.html
    A bit more pricey...

Or replicate the design/make your own design and diy.

Got ours a while ago but first time using it this weekend! Loved it! Wouldn't mind getting some sort of mattress topper though. Biggest issue we had was it was a bit hard to get one of the window rods in due to how close it's mounted to the cab of the truck.

I want to get a mattress topper for mine as well, as comfy as the mattress pad is (relative to the air pads and stuff we used to use in our ground tents) its still not always very comfy. Half the time I sleep in the RTT I'll wake up a few times a night because my hips or lower back hurts from not having enough cushioning.
