Feeling Unstable

New member here. I have a 2017 TRD OR in blue. I just updated my tires to a 265/75/16 on TRD Pro wheels. No lift and no mods to the suspension.

Here is my issue...I am getting an odd shake/wobble at speeds over 60. I recognize that I did increase the truck’s height by .5 inch, but did not expect this. Has anyone else felt this after a similar mod?

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

things to check:

Is tire pressure the same in all tires ?
Are the lug nuts torqued to the correct spec?

Best bet is to go back to place that installed tires and ask them to rebalance.

 

I'm not sure what's up here and I'm not trying to diagnose, but if you don't have an actual issue, i might recommend considering the Hellwig rear sway bar for the 3rd gen Tacomas. it's great for stability if you do lots of highway time. i have one and it's a big part of my setup, and works brilliantly.

Yeah what he said ^^^ My guess is they're not balanced properly, but tire pressure is a great place to start.

 

First thing I'd be doing is checking those lug nuts to make sure some tech didn't get distracted or something and forget to torque all of them down. Happens way more often than you'd want to think. Never assume that someone working on your truck is going to care about it as much as you do, I always check the lugs after getting tire work done.

If that checks out, take it back to them and describe the issue...most likely a balancing issue. KO2s are good tires but some people report having a lot of trouble getting them balanced (I never did but I read about it on here time to time)

 

So just checked and on cold(ish) tires. The pressure is 40 on both fronts, and 41, passenger rear and 43 on driver rear. I’ll correct that ASAP.

 

Try like 33 front and 31 rear and go from there. If you wanna get fancy, do a chalk test.

 

If those are E rated KO2s then 40+ psi is going to make them ride like bricks, ask me how I know lol. Then again my truck is lighter than the 3rd gens but I would think ~32 psi would be better

My tire shop put mine at 55 psi when they installed them, don't give those guys too much credit haha. They're just trying to crank out jobs and often aren't considering the details of each vehicle they're working with tires on. And keep in mind the suggested PSI on the door jamb is for the stock tires which are much lighter than E rated ones, so those suggested numbers won't apply

 

Yep. Try and that and double check the lug nuts as suggested above and go for a drive. If you have a torque wrench it wouldn't be a bad idea to crack them loose and retorque, one at a time, to save yourself potential future headaches if they over tightened them.

 

Lug nuts. Tire pressure. Balance. Yep that pretty much covers it.

 

Tire pressure, lugs are tq down correctly and weights are still on the wheel if used. The hellwig sways are great but in this case the sways wont help with the light trembling you're experiencing.

 

Definitely try to have them rebalanced

 

Thanks everyone. The install came with lifetime balancing, so I don’t anticipate any issues.

Something I should have added in my original post, if I go over a couple bumps at speed (60+), it’s borderline unsafe.

 

That sounds like how mine felt when the tires were overinflated...hitting small bumps on the freeway made the rear end especially feel like it was going to jump sideways on me. Bringing the PSI down helped a ton.

 

Chalk test? Please explain.

Basically draw a line across your tire and drive back and forth in a straight line and see how it wears. Chalk missing in the middle, pressure too high. And so on.

 

Aside from these issues, the tires are WAY better than stock. People kept saying it would be a rough ride, but I haven’t noticed it...obviously aside from the issues detailed above.
