I agree with all of this. Hardshell or something like the ikamper skycamp 2x is the only way to go if you are going RTT. The covers are a huge pain in the ass, especially the ones with a zipper. It would easily take 20+ minutes to setup the one I had, plus more if you wanted the annex, etc

Once you’ve done it, you realize there’s gotta be a better way, especially if you are changing camp sites daily

That led me to the habitat. I can be setup in 2 minutes, packed up in <5. It’s so much easier and saves a ton of time on a week long trip. I’ve got a huge amount of interior space - much more than a RTT w/ annex plus a 7 foot overhang off the back of the truck.

If I’m taking the Tacoma, I have a swag. I just got a new one, shipped from Australia, for $200 (thanks exchange rate). Roll it out, add 2 poles and you are done. Roll it up with all your stuff in it. You can even set it up in the truck bed if that’s your thing.

It’s so easy to add a shit ton of weight and create all kinds of problems for yourself. The lighter and simpler, the better.

Depending on how far and how often, I’d much rather have the bike on a trailer. So much easier to load and don’t have all that weight in the back.

    I bought from here
    https://crashpadgear.com/

I got the rider for $215 shipped. I figured there was no way shipping was free but sure enough it shipped.

    Coupon if you want it
    TAKE5OFF

I haven’t had a chance to actually use it yet but it seems well built. It even came with a canvas storage bag to put it in.

Ronny Dahl has been using one (I think the single) for a while and I figure if it gets his stamp of approval it should be alright.

She’s a little Duc.. only 400lbs wet. I have a ramp that folds into a tailgate extender and it’s so much easier to park. That other pic was taken in Rhode Island, so I like to travel with it. I stand on a cooler and walk it into the truck. It’s pretty simple setup. I want to sell the tonneau cover to buy a better mounting system to secure it. I like my trailer... but I’d like to get rid of that too.

I want a darche dusk to dawn but getting one is the issue. It’s weird because you can get tents and awnings but no one seems to have swags. I guess they just haven’t caught on over here.

I also have an ARB double. I apparently neglected to look at the specs because the thing is huge, that’s why I bought the crash pad one. Plus I can use it on the bike too.

If anyone is interested, I would consider parting with the ARB (swag plus storage bag). There’s nothing wrong with it, I just have too many tents...I think I’m currently at 5 plus the habitat..

I just looked and I have $733 in the swag, bag & shipping so something less than that lol

It’s brand new and pretty much just been chilling since I got it. I’ve set it up inside a few times but that’s about the extent of it. I don’t think I’ve actually used it in the wild, I bought it right before I got my trailer so it never got used and since then I got the habitat.

After having a RTT, I don’t know that I’d ever do it again unless it was on a trailer as a base camp.

Well that was pretty damn comprehensive, thank you! Referring to your later post those little swags look sick and perfect for what I’d ever be doing. When my little girl gets a bit older I’ll probably need something a bit roomier, but for now I’ll just borrow a tent from mi madre.

Weight was my biggest concern. Shit, back when I had my leer topper I’d take that fucker off before wheeling because A: it was heavy and B: 4 little bolts seem pretty hard pressed to hold dynamic weight of some bounces, drops etc. IMO. It would be nice regaining some dry storage tho, @VangaSTL’s setup keeps catching my eye with a rack for a spare, side lighting and what have you.

Probably a little heavier than that lol but no not the roof, a rack that sits above a tonneau cover but well below the roofline, similar height to your bar in the bed. If haven’t noticed I’m not a stickler on dents or scratches so it can bounce it’s way off the rack!
