Driveshaft exploded today

That pic suggests a major exhaust leak. The flanges aren’t remotely close to square. Does it sound “raspy”?

that was obvious. It still doesn’t look like it’s aligned properly. If it’s sealing, it’s barely doing so. The rest of your truck is not exactly performing properly. I don’t know why a seemingly poorly aligned exhaust should be expected to.

Unhook it from the hanger, tighten the flanges with proper alignment. Note how the hanger needs to be bent to align properly, unbolt it, bend the hanger, rehang, repeat.

 

It's the angle of the picture dude. It's totally flush. Also not to be a jerk but in case you missed the point of this thread...I'm stranded in Kansas with a shattered driveshaft end and blown cv axle 1200 miles from home...the exhaust is the least of my worries right now

 

Thought you were rolling now. Best of luck. That’s not the angle of the picture, however, if that’s the ball joint looking connection, then it will seal up a lot better at funny angles than the other connections.

 

That's the y-pipe to exhaust connection and it uses a gasket that will allow the flanges to mate when not perfectly flat and still create a sealed connection. If it was leaking, there would be black soot where the exhaust was leaking out.

 

Didnt read whole post, dont know if anyone mentioned it. Many of these drive shafts were recalled and warranty covered by tacoma. I caught mine before it split, but it was close, looked just like this, same spot.

 

These failures were always something that made me nervous.
On all my trucks with one piece driveshafts, I always rigged a driveshaft loop towards the front of the shaft out of heavy stiff wire. That way, the shaft wouldn't hit the ground if the front u-joint blew.

 

That's messed up....

 

Dont you just hate the junk IFS 4x4 system in theses trucks,you can never get them to work when you need them.

 

they actually work great. he just had a freak bad stroke of luck in my opinion. wish we had a better solution for our brother.

This. Totally agree.

For anyone considering a lift, the driveshaft angles get screwed up even if you "adjust" with the center support bearing shims...which puts more wear on the u joints and flange (and a ton of other important things like your cv axle). It takes a lot of angle measurement and math to get it back right...which you can never quite do back to stock specs...and optimally a single piece custom made offroad driveshaft from Tom Woods driveshafts ($5-700+).

Alas, currently waiting for the flange replacement shipment to arrive after being stuck in Kansas for 5 days.

 

@nd4spdbh here's a pic of the cv angles you asked for...they became pretty extreme after the lift

 

Basically it literally blew up from the excess friction. Once the rubber gasket was shot grease started leaking out and burning up. Followed by loss of cv bearings rolling down the road. And then extreme grinding noise. You lose good steering control and it ain't pleasant.
But shoutout to @Sacrifice for spotting a replacement cv! And major thanks to @KCTaco77 for the tow and offering his personal garage to store the truck til the part comes in! Good people on here...
