did you by chance get any pics taken of the surface after the wire wheel/grinder and before the undercoat /primer was applied?

were you able to get that O2 hookup fixed that got chewed up

and just one newb ? ... that piece that the U bolts attach to on the axle, is that attached to the axle or is it a separate piece? ... not sure what it is called off hand

 

As others elluded to, the inside of your frame is pretty important, if anything, MORE important than the outside. These things rust from the inside-out, and since you can't see the inside (unless you have one of those fiber optic cameras), the rust tends to get away from you in there.

The problem with under coating or the bed liner type stuff is that unless you get perfect coverage (and since the frame is boxed, it's nearly impossible to get perfect coverage), water/salt will still work its way into the frame and create rust that you can't see. That's why people like the fluid film stuff; because it doesn't actually dry or harden.

so this inside of frame paint or coating on the innards is defective?

I’ve been banging out as much as I can but there certainly is going to be some spots I missed. I got an amazingly good deal which is why I’m fine with spending a bit of money in upgrades. I enjoy working on cars and motorcycles as a hobby so my time is not completely wasted! If I can squeeze out a few more years I’ll be happy I’m hoping to catch a good deal on a totaled/parts first gen that had their frame replaced and swap it in. I like the first gens so much more than the newer tacos...

 

Yep, Il post some more pics of the before and after. And I figured out the O2 connection!

The plate is separate from the axle and held on by U bolts and shock.

Pretty sure we've talked about this before. I'm not sure "defective" is the right word, but yeah, when these frames, and MOST other frames are exposed to road salts, the frames WILL rust. All it takes is one chip in the paint, one slight imperfection, etc... and salty water will get in there and rust.

The problem is that our frames are boxed for a good portion of the length, so water can get in, but not OUT easily.

 

thanks, i was curious if the paint is not chipped then it 'should' seal and no liquid gets in?
how do insides of the frame get chipped up?

i can understand the outside from kicking up gravel and small rocks, larger if you off road possibly
maybe abrasive sand getting inside and just the possible shifting around while in motion or gravity on a hill?

(road) salt just accelerates the issue. So does coastal salt air/moisture.

Paint is not a perfectly impervious membrane either. So salts and water can eat away at the paint and find little spots to get in.

But as Running Man said, it just kinda happens.

Maybe they don't see as much snow in Japan as they do here, or maybe they don't salt the roads there. They also don't tend to keep older cars there so it's probably just not something they factored in to the engineering their vehicles. This is all speculation, of course...

Toyota basically just under estimated how much protection the frames would need for the rust belt states. Sure, they could have powder coated the entire frames, then dipped them in a vat of bed liner stuff, but that would have added pretty significant cost and weight.

 

I'm pretty sure there is still sand in my old 4Runner (where ever it may be) from a trip to Pismo I took back in like '97.

400 years from now archeologists will find my current 4Runner, and will still find remnants of the glitter my daughter spilled in the back seat last year.

Ran into this issue while removing my UCA bolt on the passenger side. The bolt is blocked with inches to go... I don’t want to cut it and get a new one. It’s one of the only bolts that wasn’t seized...
