Hi, I'm a new Tacoma owner, just bought a 2002 Prerunner that the previous owner converted to a 4x4. I am looking for a second set of rims to mount snow tires on, and found these on Craigslist, which the seller says come from a 1999. Will they fit on my truck?

Apologies if this question has been answered before -- I searched for it but couldn't find it. Thanks!

Yes. But they’re only 15” and would prevent you from upgrading to Tundra calipers and brakes in the future.

What are the advantages of upgrading to Tundra brakes? I use my truck for a daily driver and work truck, no off-roading, and don’t carry or tow huge loads. How much more does it cost than the regular Tacoma brakes?

They are just more powerful brakes. The great thing is it's purely a bolt-on mod, which is why it is so popular. Calipers, rotors, pads and brake lines are all you need. But they won't fit the 15" rims.

If you don't plan to put big tires or whatever on it, then you'd be fine with those rims.

It looks like those things have been stored in the ocean.

Nope, I did the same on my 02’ 4x4 conversion. No clearance issues.

Haha you must not be from northern New England! The road salt is just crazy up here. But I don't mind, he only wants $65 for the set, and I'm going to put snow tires on them and only run them in winter.

I am going to pick them up this week, and the seller tells me they are 16". As far as I can tell, my truck has stock suspension etc. What is the biggest tire I can put on them with no modifications?

Definitely not. Live in CA where we don't generally have to worry about that kind of stuff. :boink:

Biggest tire with NO modification? Depend on how much rubbing you want. For NO rubbing is 265/70r16 (stock size) is about all you can hope for. I've run 265/75r16s since I bought my truck, and with stock suspension it rubbed the frame in parking lots.

If I had either small wheel spacers or more backspacing on my rims, that probably would happen, but then you run the risk of rubbing on the fenders.

How much damage will rubbing in parking lots cause? The truck currently has 265/70 R16s on it -- I haven't noticed any rubbing but I am still not driving it much b/c it needs new bumpers to pass inspection. Or maybe the 70 width instead of 75 makes it not rub.

EDIT: I just learned what tire sizes mean (used to think the second number was width).

Just my little opinion but I think the stock Tacoma brakes are pretty darn good. I have been impressed with mine during certain situations over the years when I really needed them. I think the Tundra brake thing is mostly for folks who really need better brakes for towing, hauling, and bigger tires/wheels etc.
If OP's going to run those 15s he'll be fine without the upgrade.
