in iowa you get your choice of anything, as long as its a shotgun.. or you can use pistol cartridges for deer season 10mm or larger in a hand gun or pistol caliber rifle.

Lot of guys have gone to bolt action 12 gauge with scopes and sabot slugs, which is basically a rifle at that point.

That led me to the habitat. I can be setup in 2 minutes, packed up in <5. It’s so much easier and saves a ton of time on a week long trip. I’ve got a huge amount of interior space - much more than a RTT w/ annex plus a 7 foot overhang off the back of the truck.

I really don't want to go the RTT route, but I'd like a cot/tent/ shade or tarp . Swag vs tent???? Still learning here.

Swags are popular over in austrailia. Basically it is a heavy canvas tent that you leave all your bedding and mattress in and roll it up.

You can also look up GFC, for a less affordable option about $5500 and i have no idea what the lead time is, last year it was 12 months i think

lead time on my habitat was like 6 weeks. it took me way longer to get the truck

 

I had a FlipPac. Loved it as it was perfect and supported allot of weight - 1,000 lbs - when deployed. You never had to worry about standing on your bedding as it was safely up and out of the way which meant if elk hunting in Idaho you could finish the days stalk and get all of your snow gear off without getting mud, ice, and water on your fart sack.

Downside to it was that it was heavily laid up in fiberglass and quite thick to be able to be as strong as it was which as you can imagine made it around 350 lbs.

The Habitat addresses all of of the FlipPac issues by using light weight materials and a better designed tent. The fold over bed component folds back instead of foreword as the FlipPac does which for some is awesome as they like having a de facto awning made by it. For me, I don’t like having to do the extra steps to fold myself up to get inside from the tailgate on the Habitat. But I’m old and my back doesn’t always cooperate so caveat emptor. I also understand that the Habitat is limited to 600 lbs when deployed unless additional rigging is included.

These additions are always going to be expensive as there is simply no bulk manufacturing option as they really are boutique products manufactured for a specific and limited audience. As to RTTs, I’d only want a hardshell if I went that way. Not interested in getting filthy every time I pull and replace the vinyl cover. Since I have the trailer when the family camps we take it. But when it’s just myself and the boy I’d rather just have a swag. My Burke & Wills would only work for one adult but it was stolen years ago so that’s irrelevant to the argument.

The new double swags that are growing in popularity are of high interest to me not only because I’m fatter now than before, but because my boy is getting bigger and bigger.

We all know that there is no magic bullet and these are just a drop in the bucket as to options.
