I saw one at a muscle car get together not to long ago... Damn fine job the guy did at restoring it. Truth be told, when I was a dumb ass kid in HS all I really wanted was a 67 or 68 Camaro SS. Black of course. Couldn't find one so ended up settling on the firebird. Never did like that pointed nose though.

    wanted this -

It doesn’t I just found your newest comment.

When you change those can you just take off the inner and outer together or do you have separate them?

You can take them off together I think. But if you're changing both you want to unscrew the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod so you can count the number of turns it takes, that way when you thread the new outer tie rod into the new inner one you know how many threads to turn to keep your alignment from being completely fubar'ed. Or I guess you could keep them together and just eyeball it.

separating them is really easy anyway, just unscrews out.

If I was older (glad I'm not), by now I would've either; owned a ton more cool cars or killed myself in a really fast, cool car.

I did spin out in a turbo Miata I owned after highschool. Boost came on as I stepped on it to beat the light; it was the off-ramp and you either turn left or right at the light. I turned right as I had stepped on it only to be caught facing the wrong way.

The Low Range video mentioned putting anti-seize on the threads when screwing the OTRE into the inner one, so yeah you might have trouble if it's rusted. In that case when you thread the new ones together just make sure you get them to match the old assembly as close as possible. You'll need an alignment afterward anyway but you'll want to be able to drive it there lol

outers are more prone to breaking on the trail. Seen more than a few trucks on the side of the trails with cross-eyed tires from a broken outer tie rod. Same logic as with LBJ's I guess, stick with OEM.

Mine were loose as all hell too when I took them off, both inner and outer. Glad I replaced them.

@JKO1998 make sure you get new boots for the inner tie rods on both sides, that's the one thing I forgot. Mine had a small hole in each of them and you don't want them to have cracks or holes, lets dirt inside the steering rack and that's no bueno. I didn't pick up new boots so I had to seal the holes with RTV silicone, hopefully it holds up.

What got me when I changed out mine, the new OEM outers gunny sent over had more threads than my original outers. So even counting the turns wasn't going to work. I remember getting the outer off, inner off and new inner installed. Installing the outer with the correct amount of turns, I'm just sitting under the truck thinking WTF... WTH happened... Took some time before I realized why it was off.

Damn steering wheel was nearly off by 45 after all was put back on. Still have no idea why they were different.

Funny you mention that, the new outers I received had less threads than the ones I pulled off haha. But, they were an exact part match to my trucks VIN.

My steering wheel was also off by about 45˚ to the passenger side, but drivable still. Stupid Firestone hardly fixed it even though they got my toe centered (according to the paperwork)...gonna have to go back and get them to fix the steering wheel I guess.

Oh another thing to pick up when doing tie rods is new clamps for the inside of the inner boots. The stock one is a bitch to get off and I broke both of them lol. I ended up using metal cable ties in place of new OEM clamps, should work just fine

dude, maybe that was it - less threads. Yeah, I think it was. F-ing really messed with my OCD lol. I probably spent a good hour if not longer trying to figure it out. Best I could get it was with the wheel off - and yeah, it was also to the passenger side. :frusty:

I was really expecting him to spin out lol but yes. See how the car gets squirrely? My dumbass, highschool-self didn't let off and I spun out.

The supercharged Miata's powerband was very predictable yet still fun as hell to drive.

    Now I want a forced-Miata again

I was able to re-use the boots as well as the clamps. Have to have that boot tool to get them off right without messing them up:boink:
