I have a 2015 TRDOR that I took to the dealership today to have my radio looked at. About a week ago my weather app on the radio stopped downloading. The service advisor just called me back to let me know my radio needs an upgrade and it will cost me $130. I’m pretty shocked that my truck, which is less than 5 years old, needs an upgrade for my radio to work the way it’s supposed to and it costs that much. Has anyone else had this issue?

I've not had an issue like that but that is complete bullshit if they want you to pay for your radio to do something it should do for free.

Just spoke with them again and they said the updates are to fix issues. So I said I’m basically having to pay for an issue with mine that is completely out of my control and began because it was faulty. They said I’m welcome to speak with the service manager when I get back up there.

Try looking here and you can do it yourself.

I think this is what you are looking for.

I recently updated my Entune stereo. I’ve been having intermittent reboot issues. It was easy. Just copied file to usb drive, placed in USB port, browsed to software update section in settings and it took like 10ish minutes. Crossing my fingers it resolved my issue but I’ll be getting rid of the unit in a couple weeks/months anyways.

I would not pay the dealer to do this.

I looked on that site and it says there’s no update for mine.

I would ask the dealer what they are updating to since the Toyota Web Site said that there is no update for your system.

That’s an excellent question. I didn’t even think of that. I wonder if there’s a way to just do a hard reset on the radio.

Btw, when I went to talk to the manager, he was willing to do it for $65 instead of the original $130.

From what I was told at the dealership, the website download is for app updates, whereas the dealer updates the actual firmware.

This is the 2nd time that I have heard of the dealer charging to update the electronics.

Would weather not be considered an app?

Yes it is an Application. The dealer is screwing you, or attempting to. Is there another dealer near you? I would take it there.

Actually what I would do is rip the piece of crap out and replace it with something that is more reliable and has better capabilities.

Do some research and go here:

    https://www.crutchfield.com/S-qvUQxGIX5vA/car/carselector.aspx

They will give you everything needed to install your new stereo and provide excellent technical support.
