Good, reliable engine and No, don't regret it. A lot less engine noise a better piece of mind. However, the loss of power is noticeable but tolerable

Wheelie bars aren't necessary. With no traffic I Just stay in each gear until 3k rpms and shift into overdrive after I've reached cruising speed. If the onramp is short or a semi is bearing down you can rev it out but honestly I do that maybe once a year if that and it's there if you need it. With my MT it doesn't like head winds but it can hold 75 no problem in rolling terrain and even if you have to downshift it's not like you have to slow down, 75 in 4th hums. Mountain grades forget 5th, 6% and its 3rd and rollin with the Clampetts. If you live in the mountains it will probably dissapoint you.

Exactly my experience. She’s a little beast that 2.7 when wound up and holds 3k rpms just fine up hills and grades. You can’t be afraid rev her with how heavy the 3rd gens are. That’s the only way you’ll get moving decently - don’t be scared of rpms if you keep a perfectly maintained vehicle. I feel horrible when she’s under 2500 rpms and struggling, and so does the tranny..

I don’t think anyone can deny the 2.7 is reliable in a light truck. I’m curious to see how it does long term in a 3rd gen.

    In terms of acceleration, it falls somewhere between a early 90's V6 full-size & V8 full-size truck.

Honestly I don’t see the point in buying a 4 banger in these trucks. The price is not that much different, and the MPG is not that much different. Go ahead and get that extra 100hp.

If you could get a single cab with “mini” suspension I might change my mind. Maybe.

It WAS worth saving $5-6k for me. Now that I’ve had it 4 months, I’m regretting it. If it were a single cab and shaved off 500lbs, I’d be happy, but it’s a heavy AC 3rd gen that needs a V6 not to feel strained. I still really like it, it’s not THAT bad with a 5spd, I just know that motor is struggling to move that kind of weight which makes regearing not even an option, but 110% a requirement if moving up to 33s.

I’ve also had some issues with it at only 35k miles which pisses me off - but it’s CPO and I’m betting the owner before me and no idea how to drive a manual. Luckily it’s all covered under warranty, but it makes me wonder if it’ll even make it to 100k without some very serious problems. Motor is bullet proof in past years, everything else around it being 3rd gen? Idk.

When I looked at the diff bt the 4 and 6 cylinder fuel economies - It just made zero sense to buy the 4 - too many negatives: Less resale value, smaller buying pool when selling, and no major MPG savings. And less power. The 4 is useless in my opinion.

    1. Totally right about the fuel economy - moment is shit on 265/75/16. 5spd 2.7.

    2. Resale is less because it costs less new - so that’s not a valid argument.

    3. Definitely smaller buying pool, I agree.

    4. Definitely not useless if you like a Japan built motor that will go 200k without batting an eye.

I’m 50/50 on my truck. Knowing my motor is bullet proof is what stops me from selling it. It’s also a piece of history as being one of the last 2017 5spd ever made.

The price isn’t the issue, for most. The 4 cyl is a preference.

Explaining the merits of the Toyota I4 to people who haven’t driven a Toyota I4, especially with a 5spd, is like talking to

That's my experience too, the 2.7 is consistently slow. Put 1200lbs in the bed and you only know it's there going up steep hills, and even then it's not a vastly different experience from empty.

I really don't think it would drive much differently if you shaved 500lbs off of the 3rd gen. If they did that and kept the GVWR we'd have damn near the best payload in the midsize class, with a 4x4 no less.

I’m not saying it CAN’T. I love my motor, even said above in one of my posts the Japan built 2.7 is why I bought it aha.

A little concerned for long long term reliability like older/lighter Toyota’s. My bigg(er) concern is everything around the truck. No reason I should have a leaky rear diff, fucked up 1st/2nd gear synchros (maybe the previous owners fault) and faulty tach/speedo cluster box at 35k. Just makes me wonder what’s going to happen at 70k.. 100k.. 150k.. luckily it’s all be covered under warranty as a CPO. You also have a 2nd gen from the looks of it - same motor, but none of the issues I’ve had as a 3rd gen owner.

Maybe nothing will happen, and I sure hope so because I love my babe. She’s awfully sexy if I say so myself and a blast to drive ;)

I'm a 3rd gen owner now with the M6. It's been bullet proof.

    I regret buying a 6 so I can’t imagine a 4 banger.

So what's the actual tank range on a 6? I routinely go 425 before the light goes on at 18 gallons and hit 450 about 1/4 of the time on mixed town/highway. For those that don't go below 1/4 tank range should be ~350-375.

That is the speed I drive on the interstate and have no problems at all. In fact last trip checked out at 25.8 mpg with the ac on at between 70-75 mph (granted only a kayak in the bed) but still happy. I have about 35k on it with no issues. Don't let the engine rpm drop below about 2k and it has very good manners.

Manual with stock tires. Seldom get anything less than 25. Towing my boat of course it gets less.
