That is exactly what I would do. It will save you money in the long run, you can just carry liability insurance on your beater.

 

He needs the truck for work.

 

Then you buy a beater truck instead of a beater car!!

 

He should have named the thread looking for a beater truck, all he wants is tire ideas.

 

Ok.... don't know what to tell you but congrats on new job?!?!

 

That doesn't solve the gas cost problem, as a beater truck won't save much more over the Tacoma. He has an automatic so he probably gets more than 20-24 mpg on the highway depending on how he drives. There aren't any trucks I can think of that get better mileage to the point where it's cost effective. Plus when you travel that far that often, you need a reliable vehicle.
