Dropped the transmission today. Here's what the snout looks like. Pretty significantly scored. The bearing itself didn't seem terrible, but the tolerance to the snout was sloppy. Lots of wobble.

Clutch was close to done so needed seeing to anyhow. Fork and fork pivot look fine.

Hope to get it buttoned back up tomorrow. Glad I had long ratchet extensions to get to those top bolts.

Finished the installation today. The URD throwout bearing kit is pretty slick. A little fine grit emory cloth to clean the snout up and the new sleeve slid on with a little bit of persuasion (no tools necessary). I also swapped out the fork pivot ball for a new one (only $30) which is a different part # than the original because of the TSB apparently. Only difference I could see to the original was the middle of the ball was beveled flat to make it narrower. They are exactly the same length. The original was showing minor wear, so I figured it was worth swapping out. Fork looked almost pristine. It went back in. A new one was north of $200!

New clutch and flywheel are LUK.

Way lighter pedal feel now, much higher engagement point (I will play with pedal adjustment later). The squeak is gone.

    I am pleased.

Here is another option to the URD kit. Clutch Master's now offers an internal hydraulic slave cylinder throwout bearing setup for the RA60/61 transmisisons. I have it installed in my FJ and it is a massive upgrade to the feeling of the clutch and should address the issues these transmissions run into with the wear on the sleeve, premature throwout bearing failure, or in rare situations, catastrophic failure of the sleeve sheering off.

I did a write up of the install over on the fjcruiserforums on my rig if anyone wants to check it out.

Does this work if you already cut off the quill ?

I can't say for sure if it would work or not. The kit is designed to use the quill to center everything but it should work if you have a little bit of the quill to center the spacer on. Otherwise you're going to just be relying on the bracket to hold the slave cylinder in place and I'm not sure if that would be adequate or not. Not sure how much the URD kit makes you cut off, I could never find good directions on it. The quill can be damaged or scratched though, that shouldn't be an issue as long as you clean it up and get rid of any burs because the spacer is a tight fit around the quill. The spacer also registers on a little lip that is on the face of the bell housing. I want to say it would be close to being possible but since it wasn't designed with that in mind, can't guarantee that it would.

I'll pass that along to the guys at Clutch Masters and see what there thoughts are on it. I know they still have a transmission that I provided them to work with to develop the internal slave cylinder kit so I'm sure they can take some measurements and get an idea if that will work. From what I can tell, I think it would actually work. You can see the raised lip that I mentioned that is on the face of the bellhousing. The spacer registers both around the outside of the raised lip and then around the quill. There might be just enough quill left to make sure that the spacer (and thus the internal slave cylinder) are centered around the input shaft.

URD instructions say to cut off the quill so it sits flush with the provided spacer, this is basically what’s left of the quill after achieving this. Let me know what clutchmasters say, I’d like to give hydro bearing this a shot in the near future.

I'm convinced! I'd rather have the Clutch Masters part over URD's.

Ahh perfect, I didn't realize the URD kit used a spacer as well. I sent your picture over to the head engineer and machinist at CM and he said it looks like the Clutch Master kit should work with what little bit of quill is left on your bellhousing. He said to mention to you that if you'd like to give it a try that's definitely something they could work out. That we they would know in the future that those who have done the URD Fix-U hydro and cut their quill down, the Clutch Master kit will work.

Ha sounds good! Also URD's kit isn't available anymore so really the only option is the Clutch Masters kit. I think the CM kit is a better setup and would chose it over the URD kit if they were both available.

180000 kms. It would have lasted to 200000 I'm sure. Keep in mind this is a bush truck. It has seen a lot of clutch use.
