Depends. I've done zero maintainance to my 2010 Frontier's frame and it's in excellent condition. I took extra special care of my 2006 Tacoma's frame and it still rusted badly.

Not just Toyota. Not just North America.
If you actively go looking for a problem, ofcourse you will find a history of it.

I can't imagine having to deal with that, I feel really bad for your mother, it also seems like it would be dangerous to continue to drive the vehicle around in its current state. I can't imagine what could happen if it decided to let go after hitting a rough patch on the freeway... Frame replacement cost is crazy high, I'm not sure if there is someone out by you that could maybe clean it up best as possible and try to patch or splice in new material? Otherwise I would try to cut my losses and get rid of it.

Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
Resale must be alot higher in Canada. 30k CAD=$ 22.6k USD for an 05. Wow. Although he doesnt say when he bought it.

I knew about the frame issue and did a good inspection at time of purchase. Frame was done in 2015. Really have to look beyond the cab and engine bay and get up under there when you are on the lots.

I called the toyota corporation on my frame rust. I bought the truck in 2014, took it to a mechanic and the frame looked good. Since it is a 4x4, I had been adding air to a tire, that I didn't have time to replace because of my crazy work hours, and out of the blue there was a hole. This literally was one day to the next. I called toyota Corp. I was told it had been serviced and the frame had been sprayed, so no frame replacement. I started doing a little investigating, called the dealership who claimed they sprayed the frame, they confessed that they did not have the facilities to spray and it would have been sent to another dealer. I called that dealer, they ran the VIN#, and stated they had never sprayed. Called Toyota corp. back, was assigned a case number and they agreed to do the frame replacement. The frame was replaced in 2016 as well as many other parts, including, struts, leaf spring, control arms, front shocks, etc. The total cost amount including a few things I paid to have put on while it was apart, was just shy of $14,000.

While I was at the dealership, there were many 05s as well as newer (2010) having frame replacement.

Don't go to the dealer, call Toyota corp. It couldn't hurt. The recall for mine was 15 years. It took some work, but they finally agreed.

It doesn't matter if they previously sprayed the frame or not - if the frame meets the criteria for replacement, it should be covered.

Apparently, it mattered to Toyota. The hoops I had to jump through to get it done was crazy. So, calling Toyota Corp . and persistence is the only reason mine was done.

Those people are flipping their shit over surface rust. No comparison between one and the other - that type of rust will happen anywhere. You on the other hand truly have a rust issue. Sad to say, but that's what the brine solution shit they use nowadays (at least here in Maine) will do to steel..

The lesson here for the future is watch your frame. Mine is a 2016. I found some small flecks of rust here and there, hit it with Por15 and some spraypaint top coat. Found a few more tiny ones I'll probably tackle in later September (hot and humid right now here in the southern part of heaven). Then late September will be fluid film in lots of places.

I figure if I repeat this annually I should get quite a few years out of this frame.

Doesn't getting the frame sprayed extend the frame warranty to 15 years after in service date? Reason I ask is my frame was sprayed on my 2009 back around March '19 before I bought my truck at the same Toyota dealer. It's already causing some major flakes to come off (and some serious looking rust under it), I'm debating it back to get it looked at. No apparent holes, but no idea what's to come if they did a shoddy job prepping it. I've been saving the chips just incase.

I would definitely call Toyota and see what they say.

There's no 15 year anything for the 2nd gens. It's 12 years from date of 1st use as outlined in the court settlement. Toyota is not going to replace 1 single frame that they are not legally obligated to do.

Is the big rust problem just where you showed? I am wondering if that can be plated.

AgingDisgracefully Yes, the frame, mainly in the front, near the wheels. That's what the original pics were from. I've never heard of plating.

Take it to a framehop specialist, see if they can do anything with it.

Ignorance is no excuse for lack of maintaining a machine that travels down the road faster than any animal can carry you. Sorry for your rusty frame but this has been plastered all over the internet for years and years. It’s no secret that Toyota has frame issues and especially being in Canada you should be no stranger to rusty cars.

I would attempt a trade for a new truck at the same dealer. Just look for a greenhorn car salesman.
