    Observation:
I was off yesterday, so I got on the rabbit trail of reading about the various small Toyota trucks (Briska & Stout, Hilux, Tacoma). I was amazed at how Toyota seems to evolve them, rather than have the more typical “each generation is a new vehicle,” like most manufacturers.
From the old Hino Briska that Toyota adopted & rebadged for a year through the 1st gen Tacoma, if looks like the truck primarily gradually evolved, with the bigger changes being the “generation.” Even then, it looks like the majority of parts & design structure simply continued from one to the next.
The biggest 2 “breaks” look to be the gen 1 Taco, where the Hilux & Tacoma diverged directions, while remaining closely related. The Hilux focused on durability & sheer cargo capacity (work truck primarily), while the Tacoma shifted to drivability & comfort (more of a personal vehicle, tp replace a car as daily driver). As the 2 types then evolved, they moved further apart. That explains many of the 1st gen “sub-generations” & the related mechanical changes that paralleled the nose types.
Many parts for first gens list compatibility as “1968-2004” ...
The parts themselves developed, but all mounting points remained the same, so newer-designed versions were backward compatible, possibly back to the old Hino Briska (the first Hilux was an evolved Briska, even built by Hino on the same production like of the old Briska since the 50s).

The biggest leap in evolution was between the 1st & 2nd gen Tacoma, where the truck grew, & far less was directly carried over. While many part designs carried over, the actual parts were no longer compatible/cross-applicable (you couldn’t physically swap 1st & 2nd gen parts, though they still looked the same or very similar).

The development & philosophy of Toyota is/was markedly different from other car companies, so it stands out to me.
The parallel that comes to mind is the engine/tranny mount for VW & Porsche rear engines cars. The actual engine mounting points & bolt arrangement for the tranny remained the same from the 1940s Beetle through the 1990 Vanagon, matching the 356 & all earlier generations of 911s (i think at least through the aircooled-the watercooled models may have changed that). Why? The 356 originally used a tuned VW engine. As it developed, they developed all engines to use the same mounts, allowing them to swap engine & tranny combinations. The original 911 was developed with a parallel 912 that continued to use the last 356 4-banger. So, the 6-banger used those same mounting points.
Thereby, a swap of a relatively late 911 engine into any rear-engined VW was a bolt-on thing.

I just find the continued evolution, going backwards, from my truck through the 1960s Hino to be real interesting.
Toyota likes to “refine” designs ... to an absurd degree compared to most manufacturers. But, that also means they have “shared” parts/system designs between models that work extremely well & are absurdly dependable (all “bugs” worked out a decade or 4 ago).

Just be careful not to overpay as the 800's are quite a few models back.
