Lets all imagine your 3rd gen is due for an engine rebuild. You're engine has given you a wholesome 500K miles and for whatever reason it needs a rebuild at that point. If you had the option to swap in a diesel engine instead of the 3.5 its got, what engine would you choose and why? I would consider a 6cyl diesel, preferably turbo, from like a VW toureg or one of those mercedes van engines with lots of low end torque. I them touaregs came out with a v10 diesel back in the day, and that sounds like fun.

you should get alot more than 500k outta the 3.5 if properly maintained.

V10 TDI's are awesome in theory but the maintenance can be a nightmare. If you were deadset on a TDI id go with the 3.0 v6 out of an A6 OR A7. Figuring out a viable option for an ECU will be tricky.

if you want a drop in option the cummins 2.8 is a plug and play option for less thank 10k. Theyre fairly recent into the market and dont have a lot of aftermarket support performance wise, hopefully thatll change

Why not just rebuild the 3.5 or grab a low mileage one out of the JY?

Most of us don’t keep vehicles that long so it’s a nonissue because nothing beats new.

This isn't a 1984 Toyota pick-up. Engine swaps aren't as easy as they used to be. It would be a complete PITA to do anything other than a rebuild the 3.5L or buy a new replacement. A swap would reduce the vehicle's functionality and reliability. Dream as we might about V8s and diesels, our trucks are only designed for the 3.5L.

Since I drive, at a max, 10k miles a year, that means it will take 50 years to get to 500k. In that case, I’ll replace it with the cold fusion reactor out of whatever Lexus minivan is available 50 years from now.

Oh just stop with the fantasizing And the diesel bullshit. I’d be willing to bet if toyota put a diesel in a Tacoma right now they would sell less than manual trans sales. Would you be willing to pay ~50k for a diesel TRD or ~60k for a diesel Pro? I doubt it. Not many people would. The people who actually need a diesel are on the highways towing heavy shit and using their trucks as trucks, only a Tacoma owner could dream of.

Let it go... life’s better that way

The only thing that would have me looking at a new 3rd gen would be a diesel.
