I’m wanting to try out the st maxx and love the look of the tire. That said I’m concerned about performance on snow plowed highway. I drive them a lot in winter, and tow a single snowmobile trailer. not enough to invest in a dedicated set of snow tires maybe 10-15 times a year. I ran wrangler duratracs the last few years on my 4Runner and am considering these as they were amazing in these conditions. Anyone have any experience with these st maxx on snow plowed highway traveling 30-40mph?

Brand new 255/85/16. Absolutely love them. After doing 285/75/16 and 265/75/16 these are by far the best investment I have made. Had Wildpeak's before and loved them, but these are awesome so far.

 

What do you like most about them? Improved power? Driveability, responsiveness? I’ve been leaning toward 285 75 16, also. Are those scs 16x8 3.5BS?

I personally wouldn’t run them in real winter conditions. I have snow tires for that.

If you need a snow capable tire (something with that three-peak mountain snowflake “3PMSF” symbol) and don’t want to run a second set of dedicated winter tires, the it’s worth looking at the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S....they’re an all-terrain with great winter capability

Looks like a great tire, unfortunately in 16” wheel the biggest they offer is a 31~32 in 17 you can run 32.7, I might just stick with my Duratracs. I appreciate the info!

 

I had the Duratracs for 30k miles on my Canyon before I couldn't stand the noise anymore. They worked well in snow but were terrible in the rain on curvy roads. The Wildpeak A/T3W is much better in every way except for deep mud but I try and avoid that. I do a lot of snow wheeling in the winter and have been very pleased with the Wildpeak in snow and on wet pavement traction is FAR superior to the Duratrac or KO2. Unfortunately I cannot comment on the ST Maxx but they have been on my "might buy" list for awhile but the lack of a severe snow 3-peak rating has kept me away.

 

Or the AT3 XLT which is essentially the 4s with more aggressive sidewalls and about 2/3 as many sipes. Should still be plenty for snow.

 

So far so good.

 

I’m going to look into the Wild peaks for sure. How many miles you think they’ll last? Do you think they’re anymore fuel efficient than the duratracs? I loved the duratracs in snow and rain and got 60k miles on them rotating the 4 tires on average about every 7k miles. Noise wasn’t an issue at all but I was running a 32” tire.

 

Alright I finally got my ST Maxx’s installed last night. Went with 265/75r16 on SCS F5s but not I’m getting just a tiny bit of rubbing on the front mud flaps. I would like to keep them on or use another set. Anyone have suggestions?

 

Looks good man! Just trim the mud flap where it’s rubbing, or remove them.

You added a larger than OEM tire mounted to a wheel with more aggressive than OEM offset/backspacing. Some rubbing, especially with mudflaps on, was inevitable.

Edit: You could look into some RockBlox (spelling??) or other more low profile flaps if your set on running flaps and refuse to trim them. I personally like and run husky mudflaps on my truck and also run SCS wheels. To me it made more sense to simply modify my current flaps rather than buying a whole new set.

 

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't surprised when it rubbed just wanted to see what others have done. I think I'll find where they are rubbing and start cutting a bit like you suggested. Shouldn't be too much rubbing. I also prefer the look of NO mud flaps but I also like my paint. It's a complicated relationship....
