Hey Robert (@BassAckwards), I know I've asked you before but I forgot. Where did you get all your FJ parts?

I went ahead and did my ADD delete while I've got the truck apart and waiting on the adapter. I took the new bearing to a shop and had it pressed on the new axle and assembled it in the tube so it was a straight swap. That snap ring is a bitch...let me know if you want me to mail you my snap ring pliers. I bought and ground them down with an angle grinder just for this job. Since I'm assuming you haven't put the FJ case in, I think you need to keep the ADD actuator plugged in to test functionality after you remove it so that the 4WD thinks it's there and will move the taco tcase into 4wd. Also, when you order parts, you may want to consider picking up a spare diff drain bolt (or the lexus alternative) for when you inevitably strip out the allen head. Remember to give that thing a couple of good whacks with a hammer before you start trying to back it out...definitely makes all the difference.

On triple sticks I went with Radesigns. I would have preferred davez off road because his linkages sit lower and are easier to clear in the trans tunnel, but I've heard nothing but bad things about his customer service and turnaround times. Radesigns was here in a week. I did a 1 inch body lift and 15 minutes of BFH massaging on the tunnel and I've got plenty of space for my linkages to clear the tunnel. The linkage on the 4wd shifter needs to be shortened or the hole made larger, but I am happy with the results so far.

 

Which guards did you buy??

Good advice, I think my father-in-law has a press that'll make quick work of the bearing.

I haven't put in the FJ case yet. I'm waiting for the crawl box to get here to punch the hole in the tub.

I don't recall reading anything about leaving the actuator installed to function test. Granted, I haven't done any reading in at least 6 months on the topic. I plan to get the ADD removed before I will use the 4WD.

Thanks again for the heads-up on that drain blue. Little tips like that prevent huge headaches and any advice is much appreciated.

RADesigns was another I had been looking at and will most likely be what I go with. Davez is nice but they don't and won't make them for chain cases anymore. You know how easier things would be with a freaking gear driven case?!

Do you think the 1" body lift is necessary? I saw it made life easier for Homer so that's been in the back of my brain too.

Homey talked me into the body lift as well, and I now that I've seen it all, I dont think it is completely necessary. The trans tunnel is pretty forgiving and moves pretty easily. Homer clocked his case which is no longer and option for us with the newer adapter plates. if I understand correctly, this would also rotate the the linkages closer to the trans tunnel so the body lift would be more crucial to making everything fit.

If you do the body lift, I recommend replacing your body mount bushings as well. Hell...it might not be a bad idea even if you're not lifting. I got started with the body lift, saw the condition of the bushings and decided to go with the energy suspension poly bushings. Hit the bolts with lots of penetrating oil, heating, and a hammer to loosen things up before you even put a wrench on them. Air hammers are amazing for this. I had my passenger side rear body mount bolt seize up in the sleeve, and snapped one of the bolts holding the front passenger body mount bushing to the frame. Oil, heat, and an air hammer knocked everything loose easy peasy. I am planning to replace all the bolts for the body mount bushings due to how rusted they were.

Also, here a pic of the Hurst shifter since we were talking about it before. Homer moved the lower part to the driver side and added a spacer to move the shifter over without having to hack it up.

Bushings in general are on my to-do list. If it's not necessary I'd prefer not to add a body lift.

Aside from all of the obvious stuff, that Hurst shifter and the triple shifters are, I think, next in line. I currently have the URD short shifter but I can't move the shifter itself any. With the Hurst I could flip it and push it forward some to give the extra clearance needed for the other sticks.

 

Get it all figured out good, hopefully in a year or so I’ll be doing mine and you can walk me through it

The only good thing about being auto is the adapter not being an issue lol. I’ve got to catch up to the rest of y’all with armor and suspension first though.

I go on days of starting Tuesday evening and will be home until the following Monday evening, with school being back going I’m pretty available that whole time man. Show up whenever and we can get it done, no payment necessary, I like working on cool trucks.
