Setting aside the complexity of a swap and the smog issues, maybe the V6 3.0L Eco Diesel Dodge uses (sans the DEF system). In stock form it has more than enough go (240 hp/420 tq) for the platform. You could effortlessly tow the current max while getting good mileage. Diesels are commonplace everywhere else, it's largely EPA hurdles and then the fact we are used to gas engines that make them slow to come to this market. there has been a lot of clamor for half-ton diesels for a while and now there has been some manufacturer response. The biggest impediment might be the cost. Truck costs are ridiculous to start with. Add a diesel and it goes stratospheric. The right turbo-diesel might make for a good tow vehicle (in the mid size range not to compete with full size trucks) that has an awesome range and plenty of torque. That would be an awesome platform for an overlander. It carries all the weight, gets good mileage, has awesome range, and Toyota quality.

    I’d replace it with a Toyota V6 3.5L

I'd put a diesel in it if I ever wanted Suzuki sidekick like performance.

See thats a great option, but not for the scenario we're talkin' bout. That seems more like a purchased a flooded tacoma for $5K and you're swapping the engine out. Im talking about lets get this running again in a not too dang expensive kinda way

I'd rebuild the 3.5, but with some built internals (lower CR).. get rid of the atkinson cycle BS.. and throw a supercharger on it, and tune to around 350HP... golden... I dont think the stock 6speed auto can handle much more than that... neither could the manual...
