I remember using a glass polishing kit on a '57 Chevy windshield while it was out and the body was being painted. After installing and cleaning, it was as if there was no glass there at all. It was incredible. Haven't used such a kit since, so I wonder if the current windshields would take a polishing like that old one did.

I wandered in here since I'm growing tired of the lengthwise crack I've had going on for awhile.

I'm pretty sure they're just plain glass, with no tint or band at the top. That's how it was for my VW. If you want the top band, just get a decal, much cheaper.
The bigger name companies are bending people over on these prices. Talked to several glass folks, no glass is costing any company more than a couple hundred bucks. The rest is mark up.

Thanks. I actually do want the green tint, to help cut down on glare a little bit. My eyes are just a little sensitive to light. I wear regular glasses, and they don't transition to tint when I'm in the car. I just thought it was odd that my Tacoma quote is pretty much the same as my '05 M3 quote, for glass with the infrared lining or whatever that cuts down on heat.

You can still certainly get any of these shops to order what you want. When I was in having mine done, I overheard the office lady tell someone that the rain sensor glass was the same price as the one without.

I've used Insight Auto Glass for several windshields now. I think I'm on number three for my Tacoma. I want to say it was $225 installed at my house, no drama for the Tacoma and I had them do my son's new to him Corolla. It was a bit more like $275. Then he went and fucked it up a couple weeks later.

Yes, he's all right. Walked away nary a scratch.

Got a quote to fix replace mine from Safetlite which includes the calibration (3rd gen). Said I was looking at $1100 but I would only owe my deductible which is $500

Way back I used Safelite and by next year the window was so pitted you could barely see out of it, seems they use much cheaper plastic than OEM. Granted, this was at least 10 years ago.

Just had mine done by Safelite on Saturday, at the recommendation of State Farm. Turd gen with recalibration for the camera in the windshield. Total cost was about $1080, $580 for the glass, $450 in labor, plus taxes. I have zero deductible glass coverage so it didn’t cost me a dime. Requested OEM glass and State Farm approved that. My only concern was the tech scratched the s&@t out of my A pillar with a razor knife, then tried to polish it out, making it worse. Now I have a scratch and a dull spot. Luckily the truck is far from pristine, but still. They didn’t tell me about it up front, I noticed it when I inspected it. They agreed to fix it, but at this point whatever.

I ended up paying $400 at safelite for the "green tint (solar) with blue band at top" and then promptly cancelled my shitty progressive insurance and went over to avalue insurance who has free full glass replacement. Actually got much better coverage and a cheaper price. f progressive man...after 1 year they gave me a "loyalty discount" that was lower than how much they raised my insurance lol

I had horrible experience with Safellite. Awful glass. Windshield was pitted badly less than a year later.

Just used Van Go and they only use OEM glass. Great experience with them. Very affordable and so far so good on the glass.

Can anyone recommend someone worth a damn in Colorado Springs? My 80 needs a new windshield terribly but the FZJ80s have a very specific install process that more often than not gets fucked up. Hoping to find someone that can do it right the first time.

I don't know what people use for insurance, but I can add windshield insurance, wait a few weeks and then make a claim, $100 deductible (for windshield coverage)

Took my truck back to safelite and had them re-install OEM windshield molding. The cheaper stuff they replaced it with, that I didn't notice at first, has a water channel. It's sort of a flair out so that water doesn't come off your windshield and into your window. But I just kept thinking of all the snow that would get packed in there and build up. Paid an extra $62 for the flat OEM one.

+1 on Insight. They replaced the windshield on my 2017 DCSB last year...met me at work and had it all done in about 30 minutes. The glass they installed is the same brand as OEM Toyota glass, just without the logo. Local CO business.
