I guess this is the case of a feature to one person is a defect to another. I don’t think the transmission mapping on these trucks is all that great but the inclusion of compression braking actually makes it tolerable to me. IMO it’s not all that aggressive and don’t really notice but I’m used to driving vehicles that behave this way.

Regarding what trucks do this...my Ram 3500 does this and depending if I enable the tow/haul and/or the exhaust brake it will do it very aggressively. I like to drive my vehicles like manuals and don’t like vehicles that coast....so I usually drive with the exhaust brake on. Also, the trucks with Allison transmissions that I have been in also will compression brake.

A side note, my wife’s Volvo does as well...you need to select “B” on the gear selector tho...but that is the default setting we drive her car.

He sure did. He started by defending his OE transmission. And then ended with how he modified it to make it better.

You (and others on this thread) are talking about Down-Hill braking assist and Towing Assist. I get that. And I am also like the fact that those exist. BUT:

Were talking about the basic principles of Energy Conservation and how it can (or should I say "could have been") used to increase fuel economy and decrease maintenance. I understand that this concept would be more favorable in a Prius Forum. But the concept is Solid. I've driven Ford, Chevy, GMC and Dodge. And all of their engineers understand the concepts of energy conservation. So maybe this is a - Toyota thing.

For all the people asking "Well why did you buy the truck then?" My answer to that is: During the test drive, there were many situations that I didn't get to "test" on this vehicle. IE: I didn't get to drive in the rain. I didn't get to drive Off-Road. And I didn't get to cost for 1.5 miles.

As I stated previously, "It is what it is". But, being my first foreign made vehicle, I'm learning that the "Hype" isn't exactly what everyone make this truck out to be.

Bro, you bought a mexican truck, not a german supercar

edit: also what hype? Tacoma gets shit on for being old and sluggish in every review I've read about it pretty much.

Transmissions are definitely more ‘engaged’ in the driving process nowadays. My Macan would be all smooth and cruise-like until I punched it. Then it would work that dual clutch magic and drop 2 or 3 gears instantly. Driving a little spirited and heavy braking would force downshifts too, keeping rpms around 3.5k or above, ready for the skinnny pedal. In eco mode ‘normal’ let off the gas and the clutches disengage and rpm drops below 800. 75 mph coast and rpm at 700. Weird. Point is, transmissions are doing all the stuff the manufacturers program them to do, and it’s not simply go up and down gears based on skinny pedal.

blazin- thanks, free own tsb's, great. just had the updated put in by the dealership for free. under warranty. what a difference. i actually enjoyed driving it for the 1st time in 2 yrs. RPM's were controlled. at 45 i was running at 1800 rpms before, now it was at 1100 with good acceleration. need to check the downshifting. now for the gas millage? there should be a recall for this. i will further update. just for grins i asked for a trade in. $28,000. got me thing.

Had the TSB done several months ago. Didn't do much good. Been using ETC and S4 or S5 depending on where I am. Thought I'd try Drive again. Sort of felt OK with it until tonight. Started to accelerate in a "normal" manner from 45 mph to 65 mph on flat stretch of highway. The POS down shifted two gears and totally caught me by surprise. Indeed this AI automatic transmission is a POS. Never in over fifty years of driving have I had an transmission with such shitty performance. (Never had a Chevy with "turbo-glide". It was a real POS too.)

All of you complaining about the transmission not coasting must be flatlanders. Living in Colorado I appreciate the added compression going down hills. One reason (of many) I traded my Nissan Frontier for the Tacoma was the Frontier AT gave zero compression going down hill. With the standard AT shifter pattern I was constantly changing gears D-3-2-3-D and hoping I didn't go all the way into Neutral. I love the S mode on the Tacoma.

just checked mpg. you are right. i finally hit the 22mpg suggested number. the upgrade is working for me. rpm are down without any neg. issues. passed today. didn't have a bad thing to say. 1st time in 2yrs. still may look at recommended programs. but no real issues here. and yes "flat liners" michigan.
