I know that size & fit may vary from one manufacturer to another, but generally speaking, should cap/shell designed for a 2nd gen (2005-2015) short-bed Tacoma fit a 3rd gen short-bed Tacoma? I've been watching Craigslist for a deal and it seems the 2nd gen ones pop up much more frequently than 3rd gen. All of them that I've seen are at least an hour's drive for me, so I'd like to be as sure as possible that it wouldn't be a wasted trip.

The dimensions are slightly different. The 3rd gen tailgates are fatter. So the fit wouldnt be ideal but if you're not picky it might be worth giving it a try.

Thanks. If the tailgate thickness is the only difference, I can be not picky to save some cash.

Keep researching as I believe there is a bow to the tailgate also, not just wider. Get the correct shell for your year. There are just too many variables and why go looking for leaks and problems.

I tried. I don’t recall exactly where but the fit was pretty bad.

3rd gen bed sides are taller. A 2nd gen shell would stick up above the cab roof if mounted to a 3rd gen.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Find a third gen. You spent enough for the truck, get the right one.

This. I was trying to cheap out thinking I would only have it on for a little trip here and there. I leave it on 90% of the time now. If it’s not in the budget just be patient. There are 2 on my local CL right now.
