In what size? 33" STmaxx (255/85r16) are about $240 a tire right now online

Wow yeah you're right, just looked it up. Weird how it flips like that, usually the Pros are more expensive in every size I've looked at. That's interesting

 

My Taco is a daily driver. It would be horribly loud running MTs, and not to mention how quickly they would wear~!

 

Yea I found it odd too. I’ve always found MTs to be more with the same brand but oh well

 

I agree with you that the loud wawawa is annoying but I’d rather have to turn the radio up then get stuck in the middle of a hayfield or on the side of a road in BFE with no cell service

 

I've ran mudders on my trucks for the last 20 years of my life. I guess I'm more tolerant to the noise. I also rotate and balance every 5K miles (free service from tire dealer) and this helps me get at least 45K-50K miles out of each set. The only bad thing about mudders is they get real slick when they get worn down, but I'm sure you know this already.

 

I've never heard of anywhere that doesn't allow certain types of tires. If anything, with rougher, loose roads, mud terrains/aggressive tread patterns are encouraged. What tears up the trails is spinning your tires and sliding around, which you are MORE likely to do with a less aggressive tread pattern.

Everything will always be a compromise. My general rule of thump is to figure out what you will be spending 51% of your time doing, and get the tires best suited for that. If it's a daily driver and a weekend warrior, get all terrains. For a dedicated trail truck or if you just care more about what it looks like (vs. practicality), get the M'Ts.

A/T's actually have really good traction in basically everything but... mud. I've been running BFG KOs for like 15 years and never really had a problem with traction except with the mud (hence "mud terrain" lol). My next set will be the KM3's but my Taco is also (now) a dedicated trail truck with the occasional trip to home depot.

If you only think we use E rated tires for their heavy load capacity, then sure, they're overkill.

However, that is NOT why we use them for off-road trucks. It's the thick sidewall that allows us to more effectively use a lower pressure.

That and the fact they don't get flats nearly as easily as thinner tires is a nice bonus.

 

D’s flex better. Just stop buying crappy tires with shitty sidewalls

 

Of course something that's thinner flexes better. But you don't actually want maximum flex. Otherwise we'd all run C's. You want enough flex but still able to support the weight of the vehicle without folding over at low pressure.

D's are a good compromise if you want something better than C's, but don't want the MPG penalty of E's, but that's it.

 

I run ATs (ST Maxx) because they're great at everything and I don't feel I'm sacrificing anything either on or off pavement. I also daily drive my rig and would go insane if I had to listen to aggressive tires.

 

That’s true. But buying E’s cause of the sidewall is dumb imo. BFG and Goodyear is known for having terrible sidewalls. Just get a quality D you can air down without worry is what I was getting at.

C’s would be too soft and wear down too quick

 

I've owned nothing but E rated BFGs for the last 20 years (except that short stint where I owned a 5 lug). Maybe C rated BFGs have crap sidewalls (I would argue that all C rated tires have crap sidewalls, lol), but the E's I have have been fantastic.

Since I've owned my Tacoma (2005), I've literally never gotten a flat.

How quickly tires wear down has to do with the compound of the tire (durometer), not necessarily the sidewall thickness, though you will tend to break down the sidewalls of a thinner sidewall when running lower pressure.

 

True, but an aggressive A/T, like my Duratracs are the next best thing to a Mud tire. If I'm stuck with my tires and my Off-Road with rear diff Lock and/or Crawl control, then the mud tires are only gonna do marginally better. And I too like to turn up the radio..
