I'm not sure if there were any real engine differences, but the automatic trans difference is the "ECT" or performance button like the older trucks used to have which helps it rev higher between shifts so it feels better. it makes it more driveable in towing or heavy traffic conditions.

    The 2016+ 2.7 has Dual VVT-i.

Other than that, no major engine differences.

Dual vvt, that's pretty much it from what I have read. It's also slower now:crapstorm:

Well.... I feel that my '18 around town with ECT off has such slow throttle response it's borderline unsafe.
ECT on and it's an entirely different truck. So much better.

I have a Access can 2019 4x4 automatic 2.7 liter and it's great. Accelerates well and very responsive. Great mileage too. Last truck wasn't that much faster 2009 Tacoma 4.0 V6. I'll take the 4 cylinder over the 2nd gen V6 since mine failed at 134000 miles.

I read some where that the 3.5 is out of the Camry, that's why you have to wind the piss out of it to get power out of it. It's not even a truck design motor. My 2.7 was really doggie till it got some miles on it and a header and a short ram intake, still tinkering with it. I think Toyota should turbo the 2.7, to run against the ford stranger, I think the TR2 would be a better truck motor than the eco boost.

I love the 2.7 2tr I think it's one of the best 4cyl engines put out. It's great in its stock form and even better when you mess with it. Mine unfortunately needed to be rebuilt after the piston rings failed. So it was bored 40 over, cp forged pistons were installed along with hastings race rings to give me options down the road, stayed with n/a compression as I would only ever supercharge it. All new seals valves etc, retained the stock cams, Lce header, clutch kit, magnaflow 2.5 exhaust no emissions, and I woke up the r155f with a core/Hurst shifter kit

I hate the 2.7, no problems with eng., but I think an old worn out Yugo would have more power. My wife drives a 2010 Toyoto Rav4 AWD W/ 3.5 v6 & auto trans. It is rated at 269 HP & 246 lb. ft. torque. I have a 2013 Reg. cab Taco 4X4 2.7 4 cyl. (V6 not available in later reg. cabs.) & auto. trans. It's rated at 159 HP & 180 lb. ft. torque. I bought it, not realizing how weak it really was. My Taco seems to be straining, at anything over 65 mph. while getting 18 to 19 mpg, with very little power & the Rav4 just eases along not straining at all getting 22 to 23 mpg & has power to spare. Rav4 rarely shifts going over hills while the Taco is constantly shifting on hills, most times will shift 2 times. Hard to imagine why they wouldn't offer but 1 eng. in the later reg. cabs & if they did, why not the V6 in all of them. Love my reg. cab Tacoma, just wish I could afford to have a 3.5 or 4.0 V6 transplanted into it. I could trade for a looonger Taco with the 4.0, but I certainly don't want a longer truck. Just my opinion.

I really do see your point, it's an engine really not originally designed for America. It's transmission usually doesn't have enough final hearing. But it excells in what it is, I generally get 24-28 highway, but above 65 mph it drops to about 22-23. It's has low end torque, but little hp really at all. It works for me, but it's just intended to go for a long time and be reliable, it's entry level. It's an honest engine that can't do all that much. I do really wish they had a v6 like the 1st Gen!!!! I have a 2wd so that might make the difference, auto sucks in 4x4 I've heard.

I don't understand why you are comparing a small SUV with a 3.5 V6 to a midsize pickup with a 2.7 4 cylinder. Of course the RAV4 is going to pull grades better, it is smaller and lighter with 100 extra HP.
It might give a better idea how underpowered the 2.7 is if the comparison was fair... say a 4 cylinder Frontier or Colorado.

you all down grade the 2.7 have you 3.5 owners know your running on 4 cylinders most of the time my brother been a tech for a yota dealer for 18 years and he told me he makes more money now since they started the 3.5 then any other with all the issues with the 3.5 they all start to have issues around 60 to 70000 miles mostly internal connecting rods rings bearing or intakes cracking

My 18 SR 4 cylinder shifts really bad on first gear and also when youre going 45 mph then have to slow down and pick up speed again it feels like the transmission shifts bad. Other than that, the rest of the gears are smooth. Is it normal?

You could always install a Trans-Go shift kit to stiffen it up. Edit: and good high pressure gas shocks like KYB gas a just to get it it all connecting a little quicker
