oh I know I have a heavy foot... and i am getting what i expect for mileage.. coming from a mazda CX-5 that got 27MPG average it was a shock to go from fueling up my 17 gallon tank once every 2 weeks to closer to 1 tank every week and a half (20 galons) if I didnt drive much... I'm ok with that.. I still take my tacoma on long trips every now and then... wifey still likes the CX-5..

Just call a tow truck and sit in it while it's being towed to your location if you want that sweet sweet mileage.

Don't expect good mileage going on anything that has a slight incline to it. I got like 15-16 from UT to Vegas

Not true here, I have an OR and I get about the same as you 21-24 even on a trip to Colorodo/Utah. The only time I see under 18MPg is in all day city traffic.

Again, maybe it's the driving characteristics of some who OR's, but it's about as predictable as the sun rising. If there is a thread about their Taco getting bad mileage, it's almost always an OR, from what I've noticed personally.

You started a thread complaining about a truck mpg rating. Think about that for a minute.

Could it have something to do with the 265 tires and the 4:11 gears?

So ya it’s a truck. So here is truck vs truck comparison. Same driver, same routes, same traffic, etc. and actually I’ve learned to use a light touch on the accelerator.

Why is my 2019 MPG less than the 2006?

    2006 TRD OR 4x4 DCSB
    17 MPG in traffic/Rush hour
21 MPG 75 MPH Open Highway

    2019 TRD OR 4x4 DCSB
    15.8 in traffic/Rush hour
16.5 MPG 75 MPH Open Highway

Here is another issue I have the inaccuracy of the - multi-information display (MID)

Spector208 posted photos of his MID – and here they do not make sense to me. I have the same issue on my truck but always to the detrimental side.

BTW - let’s just say for arguments sake that when the display shows your tank is empty you fill it back up with 16 gals. Ya, I know it’s more, but for discussion
    • 1st photo suggest 317 miles total trip to tank empty getting 22.5 MPG - If the truck traveled 317 miles with a 16 gal fill-up = 19.8 MPG, 2.7 MPG less than display
    • 2nd & 3rd photo – 147 miles/25.1 mpg - 16 gal fill-up = 9.2 mpg, -15.9 mpg less than the display
    • 4th photo – 432.5 miles/25.4 mpg – 16 gal fill-up = 27 mpg, 1.6 mpg more than the display
    • Last photo - 319.6 miles/26 mpg + 16 gal fill-up = 20 mpg, 6 mpg less than the display
My Multi Information Display (MID) Distance to Empty seems to be accurate. Typically my mileage when tank is near empty is about 300 miles and I fill-up with 16.8 – 18.7 gals. Which gives me about 16-17.8 mpg combined - using actually miles traveled and actual amount to fill the tank. Well short of my 2006 Taco!

Is this normal for the displays to be inaccurate?

I nurse the bejeezus out of my 2017 SR to get 18 on the hwy. I wish I had monitored the mileage better before I put on 265/75r16s. I do wonder how much I lost.

It is always making calculations and adjusting for it, when I filled up the other day the display said 22.0 and it hand calculated out to 22.1 so its pretty damn accurate.

    FACTORS IN mpg

GEARING (this includes tire size, rolling resistance (affects gearing ratio), air pressure (affects rolling resistance, and gearing),
ENGINE POWERBAND (the powerband determines the gearing used in the transmission, and in the axles, as well as tire size. engine is one factor that can be tuned to increase driveability and is a tool or compromise between power, and fuel consumption while keeping the vehicle driveable (this is a stock tune based off of engine samples and uses adaptive tuning to adjust for driver style, and various other atmospheric conditions, and emissions regulations. tuning will only help if the engine is properly equiped (built correctly, not all upgrades work together (watch engine masters))...)
ENGINE CONSUMPTION (GIVEN GEARING/TIRE SIZE) this is determined by the physical setup of the engine (parts), tune, and power goals set by the manufacturer/builder
AERODYNAMICS (WIND RESISTANCE, AND DRAG CO-EFFICIENT) more drag = less MPG's, less drag, more MPG's... but you are basically driving a brick...
WEIGHT lets face it these trucks weigh in at 4400lbs.. not light by car standards.. and again aerodynamics of a brick...
DRIVING STYLE (HEAVY FOOTED, CASUAL, HYPERMILER).... your driving style ultimately determines if you can get close to or above that EPA rating..

this is just a bit of info that may help you understand some of what goes into getting higher MPG's.. in the end it is up to the manufacturer to build what the people will buy... LOTS of compromise to give you what you want, and what EPA regulations will allow, the auto manufacturer also keeps a close eye on cost, as profits will keep them working, and able to create, build, and invest in new technologies that may put them ahead of their competition, and meet future CAFE standards.

dcsb TACOMA IS 4400LBS... gvwr IS 5600 LBS (400lbs under the GVWR class 1 max rating) thus the less than stellar 1200lbs or less payload capacity.. (this payload capacity includes driver, and passengers) so be careful how you load up your tacoma.. once you put a RTT, recovery gear, winch, skids, sliders, camping gear.. etc.. you will be at that GVWR sooner than later.. this is based of vehicle weight, the capacity ratings of the engine, trans, axles, and suspension.. there is a margin of safety, but should not be encroched.. lest you have an accident and be found at fault for being overweight.

the gears part is true.. but with the way the transmission is geared the shifting too often is causing more issues with driveability, and actually causing loss in MPG.

the V-6 engine has less rotational mass, and has to work harder to turn the gears, and axles.. F-150 has a payload capacity ranging from 1200lbs to 2300lbs depending on engine/transmission in the truck..
