JFR Equal Length Y-Pipe for 2nd Gen Tacoma, T4R, & FJ Cruisers

So now that I know we’re still only going to be a couple of hours apart, I need to come see you. Mine won’t be a direct bolt in because I have v-bands and shorties. Have you done any with skid plates?

 

@Roostfactor thank you for starting this thread! Your doing beautiful work on your y-pipes!! I honestly never thought a Tacoma could have a refined sound until I saw a few videos using your y-pipe.

I have also entertained various exhaust designs however each one incorporated a Helmholtz resonator. @DocME mentioned it on one of the previous pages. Have you considered trying this approach? They do work really well and are easy to tune in order to attack the drone at a specific rpm.

as an exhaust nut over here for every vehicle I've ever owned, this thread is a great read watching great work. it's not often an exhaust thread is all raves and few or no rants.

I've invested sick amounts of time & money in my 3rd gen. but i am elbowing out to be the first 3rd gen in line when you're ready for me @Roostfactor ... if you get that far, all good however it goes. i just noticed you're just north of me. I'm in Denton.

So when do you start development of the JFR EL Headers?
I'm sure your approach could be better than the only current offering of EL Headers.
Fyi, URD has there Spec-U system back out. Wonder if they addressed the drone?
Either way, your Y pipe is still a good deal in that aspect, plus it will work with any cat-back.

A lot of peeps have skids with my y-pipe. I have not installed them so I havent seen the clearance 1st hand. Some skids may need a brace trimmed where the pipe goes under the trans.
It would have to be a full custom fabbed y-pipe to make it fit correctly since I cant use the jig to make it.
We can do it though!

Yes I did experiment with a 1/4 wave resonator commonly and incorrectly termed a Helmholtz. I had installed mine between the resonator and muffler and in hindsight should have placed it post muffler. I had an expanded piece on the end with a clamp for adjusting length. It has been removed for a long time now.

Yes I saw the Spec-U was out again. I dont know what EXACTLY they did to fix the funky sound when paired with headers but I did hear it first hand (on the original spec-u) when we installed EL headers on @JustDSM's truck. Sounded great with stock manifolds but was less than stellar after header install. He removed the Spec-U within a week and sold it.

Talking about URDs y-pipe right? I would agree it sounded alright with the manifold. As soon as I put long tube headers on, rasp and drone city. I thought it was the headers... appears I was wrong.

It is not their "Off Road" y-pipe.

 

Can I get a dimension on the rise pictured here please? Center of hole to center of hole would be ideal I suppose.

 

I was thinking about doing mine with a ceramic coating too but to reduce temperatures more than to protect the material. Anyone who's done ceramic coating think they're effective at reducing temps for the cost of the coating?

 

I did ceramic coating. Its the same coating on my URD spec u lt headers. It matches and serves 3 functions;
1: temp reduction. Sensitive stuff near exhaust that needs protection.
2: make my exhaust maintenance free for life
3: keep my truck murdered out... If you can spend $1150 plus a welding tip for 1 part of your 4 piece exhaust... What's $200 on ceramic coating? Once they see Roost's Y pipe, the price could even go lower. Lol. Good luck!

 

Yea, I'm mainly doing it for temp reductions. In all the years of owning vehicles, I've never had an exhaust rust out or fall apart, so I'm not concerned about that. Did you have the URD headers installed before they were coated? Noticeable before/after difference of underhood temps?

 

The headers all come coated, so no real before and after comparing. But there are a lot of websites and YouTube videos that show there is a significant reduction in surface temperatures. It’s probably worth it. I thought a lot about doing it, but ultimately couldn’t show enough patience to have it done.
Also as Roost pointed out to me, if I’m going to be rough on it, it’s just going to scratch off anyways. The heat discoloring on 304 looks pretty neat too.

 

Yea, I've seen the videos and reviews, but I'm always skeptical ... And I do see a lot of reviews that seem to suggest most people do it to "protect" the "investment" of their new headers, etc. So I just wanted to see if anyone had actual real world experience (before and after) of any temperature drops since that is my main goal.

 

Coatings have worked for me. For example when coming from polished long tubes to coated equal length headers the engine bay was faster to be cool enough to work on. Coatings are great provided the metal and welds are of high quality. Using low grade stainless for example with introduce a faster onset of metal fatigue and the pipe and or welds will fail.
