    Alright i know some of you guys are gonna be upset but I took off the factory graphics on my 96 first gen. I like the way it turned out but I think my paint it single stage!!! I have tired doing research to see if Toyota went cheap for a few years with single stage. I wet sanded and buffed were the decals were and it turned out great, but my buffing wheel was brite red when I was done. Have any of you guys ran across this before?

    I would actually think the paint was a brighter red under the decals because of sun fading.
    Red tends to fade a lot over time.

    Yep, Cardinal Red turned into "Cream Of Tomato Red" in no time.

    My detail shop informed me that my truck has a single stage paint job. They made it sound like it's a bad thing, but I still have paint after 20 years and that's pretty good for an Arizona truck.

    Yes, solid was standard and metallic was an option. Sometimes the "option" was bundled with other packages/options.
    The 99 sales brochure has 9 color samples. The only solid colors are "Natural White" and "Cardinal red". The other seven are metallic 2 stage with the footnote "extra cost color".

    I won't go into it but the two previous posts where the posters say single stage is better than base/clear is absolutely false. Base/Clear is far better which is why you can't find a new vehicle anywhere in this day and age without the two stage base/clear on it. It would take me a good hour and a full page to explain why they use base/clear and why it is superior in every way from durability to "saving the planet".

    I did restoration work on classic cars years and years ago. Think 80's and mid 90's. Did a lot of Jags, Porsche's, Vette's and even a Warwick of which there were only seven left in existence at the time. Even a Roll's and a Ferrari but mostly Jags and many Vette's. I also did the standard insurance work on everyday vehicles.

    Single stage went out around 20+ years ago.

    I agree with have a base and clear coat. I did body work for about 8 years and single stage paint is just the cheap way to go. I dont want to paint the whole truck but we will see.

    I have no problem with most of the pro clear coat reasoning. Heck I was laying clear on exotics in the 60's. It's no great revelation that it is the standard of the industry today and has been for decades. I will ignore the 3rd gen color that is single stage.

    All that is no consolation to folks with 20 year old pealing or other wise failing clear and what it takes to remedy. That's all I'm saying.

    I’ve have the original single stage paint that is 21 years old with 600,000 worth of road miles and still looks fantastic with a yearly buff.

    The black paint on my 98 has really gone to shit. Even the clear on the inside of the door is starting to fail.

    Yea, dark colors absorb the heat and light and white reflects the light and heat, so lighter colors last longer

    I know. I've considered getting it re-painted but it's kind of nice not caring at all about the paint. It's just the rust that worries me. Now that it has a hold I'm not sure anything can be done.

    The delams with the clear coming off aren't the fault of the two stage paint job. t's the fault of the factories and the fact that when they started doing it on a production scale they screwed it up. Clear doesn't peel off of the base coat unless it was applied wrong. It's just like the hypertutectic pistons they started putting in the engines back in the 90's. What a shit show that was, and still is sometimes. This is the kind of crap we pay for when companies are forced to "save the planet" when the technology either isn't there or is decades away from being plausible. Like self driving cars.
