JFR Equal Length Y-Pipe for 2nd Gen Tacoma, T4R, & FJ Cruisers

    With the vast knowledge base that frequents this thread hopefully there will be someone who can answer a couple of questions I have about coatings and headers. I have a third gen which has a very different exhaust system than the second gen trucks. There are a few pictures below which will give you an idea what I am working with. Currently, I have a URD y pipe and a TRD pro cat back. The last piece would be the pipe which exits the heads. Right now I have 2 options. URD calls their pipe a power extractor while OV tune calls his pipe a big mouth dump tube. The URD pipe comes with a ceramic coating on the inside and outside while the OV pipe has no coatings but does include a high flowing catalyst. Since all the exhaust runners are located inside the head with only one exhaust port this means that this exhaust port is going to be a lot hotter than three separate ports would be. By adding the URD coated pipes the engine compartment will be kept cooler but the extra heat will be retained inside the pipes which will add even greater heat stress at the exhaust ports than there already is. It would also mean that I would likely have to add a cat just after the merge on the y pipe since I would not want it smelling like a car from the 1960's. Choosing the OV pipes would not be as efficient as the URD pipes but at least I would not have to add a cat after the merge. By the way, I understand that OV is not as popular with the 2nd gen crowd but that is because he has tuned over 2000 3rd gen trucks and less than 100 2nd gen trucks so he knows where his bills are paid. Our 3rd gen trucks have had to endure almost 4 years without any boost options and now he is producing a S/C and TT kits which actually gives us a choice.     The absence of CATs will not make your truck smell like a 1960's car, so dont let that sway your decisions. Higher flow should always be the goal when modifying exhaust, and CATs restrict that flow.

    I might be inclined to disagree with this. If you go headers and y pipe your exhaust, especially at startup, will smell a bit gassy. It's noticeable. However I don't think it's obnoxious. I have a high flow cat in my mid pipe too.

    You will smell the hydrocarbons but imo with a decent tune it wont be bad. Plus with e85, e100, race gas the smell is pleasant imo but it is not to be breathed in a closed environment. My 4runner is straight pipe with plans for a removable cat for state inspection. My taco I plan on leaving the front cats so I dont have to deal with them.

    Yup. My Bimmer has no cats. Smells worse than my truck. OEM tune, versus tuned truck. I run the truck leaner at idle.

    This is what I meant to say. I can definitely smell my truck, but it's not bad or obnoxious. Now if I close my truck in my garage and let it idle, I'll kill myself in very short order lol, smells like I just spilled gasoline. But in normal, non-suicidal scenarios, it's totally fine sans CATs. I love me the smell of race gas! I run it in my 450cc, wish I could afford to run it in the taco

    Been to a bunch of supercross events, and the entire stadium smells like racing fuel. It's the best part.

    I see the URD's have a reduction (step) while OV doesnt.

    3rd gens have secondary cats correct?
    Do y'all have a way to turn off the cel?
    Does the OV version prevent the cel since its catted?
    If you are planning turbo or sc will these need to be replaced?

    I'm sure there is plenty of coolant flow in the exhaust port area to combat heat with this new design. I havent read why OEM's are going this rout but probably for packaging and lower heat in engine bay.

    The latest F1 engines are still using equal length header runners feeding a turbo so I doubt it's for performance reasons.

    The 3rd gens do have secondary cats which were removed with the URD y pipe. Since the secondary cats are not monitored their removal won't set off a cel. OV can't legally turn off the cell but he did say that his catted dump tubes did not set off a cell. I am planning on adding boost but haven't decided on which kit OV will be offering. He said that his dump tubes will work with either of his kits. They are still in the development stages and hopefully will be ready by the end of the year. Thanks for your help.

    I ordered 2 of the 45°s and I have some straight pipe. I think I can figure it out. Ill post what I come up with. I'm trying to keep all exhaust above ladder frame.
