Top of the morning to ya all,
This is my first post, but have been checking out the blog for several months now. I have learned a lot.
I have a 2019 TRD Offroad and haven't been thrilled with the shifting issues. I have experienced the gear hunting when the road is not flat. Seems it can't make up it's mind on what gear it wants to be in. Also, when slowing down, gears don't down shift appropriately so if I need to get back into it, I'm in too high of a gear, so truck down shifts hard and it's a very harsh, jolting (shot out of a cannon) feeling. I have learned about the 2016+ issues and the ECM flash. Of course, I don't see any TSB for my 2019 nor does my ding-dong service advisor know anything about the issue I have described...big surprise! I have scheduled a service for Thursday Aug 29th to have them do a computer scan on it. I'm not very optimistic on this and will probably be a waste of time. OK-now my question...does anyone here have a 2019 TRD Offroad with this same shifting issue and has anyone learned of a TSB or a flash of the ECM that may be out there?
Thanks for reading thru and I hope to have some more ammunition before I head to the dealer next week.
    Bye for now....

The shot out of a cannon doesn't sound normal, I would check the tranny fluid, some on the forum have been delivered new vehicles low on fluid, haven't got to check mine yet now at 6,600 miles but I don't get that 'jarring' some have described.

As far as hunting/shifting, I didn't believe a transmission could learn and I brought mine in first after about only a month of owning. They said my 19 had the latest flash & that it was normal, However, in the next couple weeks, out of annoyance I started putting my foot in it and trying out some trips to/from work with the ECT button on and/or sometimes in S4 or S5. After about 2 weeks I got bored of pushing all of the buttons and went back to regular old D mode.
All of a sudden, it's like the truck knew I wanted more from my experimenting & it started shifting way different & much more acceptable in regular old D mode & without having to stomp it.
It really does seem to learn, not perfect but much much better than when you 1st get it, GL!

I just discovered the ECT a few days ago. I have been enjoying the truck more with that little ditty turned on. It seems to shift better with ECT on? Am I crazy?

I thought these problems were fixed on the 2019s ?? I have the exact same issues with my 2018. After complaining for a while the dealer finally told me I needed and aftermarket reflash or a new 2020 truck. The guys that said they don’t have these issues do. The truck is way underpowered and over geared, the tranny is programmed to keep the truck between 1,000 and 1,500 rpm making it a complete turd. Maybe the OVtune would fix this, but why do I need to spend $700 to make my truck run right?

My 2005 Taco never had a gearing issue like this? I'm convinced the 2019 is the same as the 2016-18 issue? I don't want to go aftermarket, if it's something that software can fix. We shall see what they tell me.

OVtune is well worth the investment. Makes it a whole different driving experience. Agreed that it should have been like this from the factory. The smile on your face will soon make you forget the $700 price tag!

The dealer is full of crap telling you to buy a 2020. The 2019 and 2020 have the same transmission software.

FYI, my dip shit service adviser told me I had a totally different transmission than the 2016. I believe I have the 6AT which is the same...am I wrong? I can't believe he says he's never heard of any shift issues or TSB's on the Tacoma??

Ok, here's what I've learned. I used to fight my 18 Tacoma up freeway hills. The whole gear hunting bit. I did get the tsb done which I assume the 19 has and it helped, BUT I learned this-

The truck does not like having the pedal mashed. It doesn't like sudden pedal changes. Smooth throttle modulation including avoiding pedal mashing will all but eliminate gear hunting. I learned how to drive it how I guess the engineers expected us to drive (like grandpas) and I've been totally satisfied since.

I agree with this statement. I almost traded my truck in even after the TSB but decided to wait one full year before making any rash decisions. I noticed an immediate difference after the TSB update. I also notice that the throttle response is much different that my previous Taco’s. I have owed two 1st gens(manual), one second gen(auto) and this is my first 3rd gen Taco. My understanding is that the throttle and fuel delivery is all electronic/computerized so this makes sense. I have changed my driving style but it took a very long time for me to get used to. When I drive my wife’s car I can clearly tell the difference in behavior. If you’re coming from a second gen taco there is a learning curve that took almost a year for me personally. I came very close to trading in multiple times.

My 2019 Tacoma TRD OR does the exact same my friend you're not alone. Especially when I am slowing down then go to punch it again I get the shot of cannon feeling. I have just learned to stomach it and drive it the way it is. Refreshing to hear I am not the only one lol

This is spot one based on my experience too. Although I wouldn’t say one has to drive like a granny. If I’m accelerating up an incline and it starts to bog down, I continue to press the pedal steady and it will gently downshift and continue to accelerate smoothly with steady pressure on the pedal. If I mash it to merge onto the highway, it up and downshifts like it can’t find the right gear. I have no issues with mine.
