I had to replace the outside straps the first year from sun rot.

Then I replaced the inner straps with heavy duty replacements.

Other then those two items I have really enjoyed mine.

I was using a rig just like yours...and it worked but was getting old and the nylon cord was getting frayed and hard to deal with. Went to Harbor Freight and got a chain hoist for $58. Was already using two heavy ropes around the RTT to attach to the hoist. Now I feel much safer! I like your use of the 2X4s I may incorporate that along with my ropes. Maybe with an I-bolt on the ends...have to ponder on that.

I have the smittybilt and dont see any reason to go to a tepui or cvt. You can find the smittybilt ones on sale sometimes for around 600-700

Looks like they only carry Tepui and Yakima brand RTTs...I would stay away from Yakima as I've read numerous reviews that they leak pretty bad. Tepuis are nice but very pricey even on sale

I have a Yakima RTT and I have used it in a nasty storm it was fine. The rain fly worked well.

Good to know, I just remember reading up on the reviews on REIs site a couple years ago when I was looking and it seemed there were a lot of comments about leaking, but hopefully it's been addressed or not a product wide issue

Im sure there are some. I was reading the same thing when I was looking at them. I figures worst case I could spray a water repellent on it. But the rain fly really works well.

And just so you know, my tent stays outside all year round. I do not have a garage or shop to put it in.

I feel for you guys that have to leave it on 24/7. Thankfully I have a garage and built myself a pulley system with a hoist so it's a simple as unbolting the bed rack, running the straps, and pushing a button. I'd probably reconsider an rtt if I had to leave it on.

I don't mind leaving mine on 24/7 (also don't have a garage or place to store it), but I have the smaller 2 person tent so it's not massive or anything. If I needed my bed space regularly then it would be an issue, or if it was a larger 4+ person tent that weighed a ton then I wouldn't want it on there all the time.

How’d you end up getting one of the rods? I have the same issue with it being too close to the cab.

Quite honestly. I love the extra weight in the bed of my truck from the bed bars and Tent. I think it rides smoother too. I only take mine off in Winter and occasionally for a week or two throughout the year. Thankfully, I just use our Forklift at work to take it off and have a spot to store it there.

...From Avery, the IDBDR splits. Not for long - the two possible routes are separated only by the St. Joe River that runs between them - but each route has it's highlights. To the west, the road follows the old rail line through several tunnels. To the east, the road follows another rail line over several trestles.
We chose the west - and will forever wonder if we made the right call! :D The tunnels though were cool, and I'm sure either route is equally intriguing.

But tunnels aren't all we saw. See it all, including the moose, in IDBDR Pt. 9 - Move Over, Moose!

Way cheaper than a DUI....found a good spot to set up by the irrigation pond so we didn't have to drive home after the party
