I drove from Alexandria, Virginia to school today (western Ohio). I lifted my truck about a month ago, and on the drive I had a crap ton of weight. I had my RTT and prinsu, as well as a yeti cooler, a huge trunk, a couch, a crap ton of clothes and just anything I would need this year. I could feel the weight right as I left, and in the mountains of MD/WV, I was kind of flying through them. Had about 12mpg, and had ECT power on for a little while, but decided to turn it off. A little bit later, I was going up a steep hill, and as I hit the gas it seemed like the transmission slipped and I couldn't get it to shift. RPMs were high, but there was also this kind of wind noise that happens, not really sure how to describe it. I could get above 40mph, so I got over to the right lane and slowed down. I tried pushing the gas after I got over the hill, and the same thing happened.

Now, every time I hit the gas even a normal amount, the same thing happens where the engine revs up and the weird windy noise comes from the engine.

With some phone advice from @ilubtimmyhos I stopped for gas and took a little break in case the tranny was starting to over heat.

I took 20-30 min breaks for the rest of the trip every once in awhile, but I figured that may not be enough to let it actually cool down, if that is the problem. Towards the end of the drive when speed limits were 45mph, the truck definitely did better as I was going slower.

I got to school and let the truck sit for a few hours. After starting it and driving it, the result was the exact same. It revs up and the wind noise comes back until I let off the gas and very slowly apply it.

I stopped at a stop sign, and pushed the gas fairly quickly, and it seemed to be stuck in 1st or 2nd gear because it revved up to almost the red zone and made a very unpleasant noise.

My guess is that it has to be the transmission, but who knows! No check engine lights or anything.

Im also going to start my own thread on this, but does anyone have any incite or advice?

Edit: I only have 31k miles on my truck... WTF

How many miles on the truck? When was the last time the transmission was drained & filled, or flushed?

"Wind Noise" sounds like a fan clutch engaging to combat excessive heat in either the engine or the transmission.

It sounds like your transmission overheated and you did some damage. With this transmission when hauling/towing heavy you should use ECT and S mode to avoid damaging the transmission, especially in hilly or mountainous terrain. At least that’s what Toyota says anyway.

I would take it to a transmission shop or toyota ASAP.

You still have 2 warranty's covering the truck. which is basically a free fix card at your dealership. Why dont you get it seen about and then tell us about it.

Lol this exact same thing happened to me when I was coming back from school fully loaded from U of Montana like 20 yrs ago

Only I was driving an 88 Chevy 1500 When I hit the WV hills. Engine revving but tranny slipping. Fortunately I was on my home turf when this started happening.

    It was low fluid.

You look around at some of these old janky pickups from all over the world and you see them hauling ass and then some like it's no big deal. A state-of-the-art 3rd gen should at least be able to handle what OP threw at it without breaking.

Because the trans is basically sealed unless there is an obvious leak it's still full.
