ok i just got this savage model 111 30-06 sprg.
    for a cheap price .....
i was shooting it and it seems that the second shot will not chamber unless you apply upward force to the mag." not alot"
yes this rifle has a 4 shot mag.
the 1st and 2nd and 4th shot work flawless..
but the 3rd always requires that you apply upward pressure on clip
    any thoughts or ideas....

i also have this same kinda problem on a old glenfield model 25 .22lr
    which is made by marlin.
that has a 7 round clip "i have a few of them"
so i know it is not a clip problem with this rifle
any ideas on what parts on this rifle might need replacing as well

    any help is app.:help::help:

9 times in 10, if you have a feeding problem, it's the mag. Check for any burrs or dents on the magazine's feed lips and correct them. I suspect that you'll find a problem with the feed lip on the side where that second cartridge rests. It's possible that the previous owner dropped the mag.

I'm no expert, but agree with Badwin- the mag itself has been bent out of shape or the spring has been compressed too long (as in leaving rounds in it for years). Maybe Brownells could help you find the spring.

do you think an old spring or whatever would cause just 1 position to misfeed?
    1,2,4 feed fine?
its always the 3rd one ...the bolt skims over the top of said round without feeding it

Could be... if I had to look for a reason, I'd say rounds 1 and 2 have enough tension from the spring due to the compression state of the spring. Round three is slightly offset from the feed lips and needs a bit more push to get it straight. Round 4 is stripping straight off the follower. Kinda sorta makes sense to me, but I'm guessing.

LOL... of course, your barrel could be loose, eh?

On the Glenfield (I had one, bought from Walgreens way the hell back when...)what's the possibility of some crud on the feed ramp? They coated some .22 bullets with wax awhile back as cheap waterproofing....

what is seems like on the glenfiels is the clips not being held up tight enough so the bolt does not catch the bullet
when i aply pressure on the clip they load fine

Don't know about the Glenfield but leaving mags loaded will NOT weaken the spring. It's the repetitive cycling that does it. Glad you got your rifle fixed. Now where's your range report?

    ;o)

I'm no gunsmith, but I believe I'm going to disagree with you on that score. No offense, but you'll find a lot of advice to unload your mags so that the steel spring doesn't permanently deform.

Badwin, I'll have a serving of the crow pie, please. My gunsmith buddies tell me I'm wrong, or that I've been told wrong, and that silicon steel springs will not take a set.

Guess I'll go ahead and top off my extra mags.

;) I was told the same thing for years then ran across some posts at ARFCOM and heard Tom Gresham talking about it and quit worrying.

I like my crow with BBQ sauce...
