Your stock air box is already a cold air intake.

“Better” cold air intake I should say looking to modify

Nothing really out there.... k&n are trash and the trd is over priced for what you already have.
You should just be able to change over the filter media. Most run dry and stay away from the oil as it can mess with the maf and throttle body.

If you want louder, get one. If you want something else such as fuel mileage or HP, I don't think it can happen. I've known a few people who have done it..looked into it myself as well 7 years ago when I bought my truck.

I got the k&n as a gift. It makes it a bit louder and sounds cool at high rpm but as far as power or fuel economy nothing has changed. Might be worse now cuz I stay on throttle to hear the air getting sucked in :headbang:

    Mainly HP

I’ve accepted my mileage for what it is, taking into consideration my tires

I just didn’t want to program or take the time to heat wrap headers and figured a better intake would help

If you want power you'll need to buck up and either dump more fuel in or supercharge

These engines come from the factory at the max HP output you can have without modification. I've heard tuning doesn't really gain much for this reason

I am running the first version TRD cai and haven't had any issues with it. Also can't say I get any better performance or mileage. Running the AFE pro dry conical filter on it. No oil. Only have it because I really lowballed a guy on craigslist and he eventually took my offer, like 12 years ago. Unless you're on the gas it's pretty quiet.

I've got the newer TRD one, got a decent deal from a member here, then spent most of the savings on an Afe dry filter for it.

I pretty much just wanted to see of it gained any mileage, and a little bit of wanting to get rid of the oddball stock filter and Rube Goldberg intake tract. It did help mileage a bit, between 0.5 and 1mpg I'd say, and that was with me being a bit enthused at the newfound existence of actual engine noises. That + an electric fan got me back to at least as good as my 1st gen with a 3RZ, so I can't complain given how much bigger it is and how much more ass (read: any) it has.

I can't complain about it, besides that it's a little silly $$$ for what is basically a 4Runner airbox with a TRD logo molded on, and a $20-30 intake tube setup. Fits my desire to keep it somewhat stock-ish though, and I like that I could just grab a plain old filter from the store if I had the need/desire.
