Sitting still in a likely spot and bushwhacking them is the most successful tactic.

Yeah. See the above comment, Mark. :p

So you gotta find a place you can legally hunt.
Preferably one that's not overrun with other hunters (public lands).

Then you gotta learn to "read sign".
That basically means reading travel routes, and likely places along one to station yourself.
Where they're feeding and what they're eating.
Places they bed down in or where they hang out when not feeding.
And locating a "rub" where a buck rubs his antlers (usually against small trees), is a biggie. Because he'll be back.

You need to learn when to take a shot, that is, when it's reasonable and ethical.
And you need to learn to do it calmly.

    In a nutshell.
The rest is refinements. Although there is plenty more to learn that can improve success.

Personally, I was always more interested in grouse hunting. Though I did hunt deer.
Which means a vast amount of acreage to cover, cuz you gotta go to them.
So I happily hunted the state forests here, and learned incidentally about deer habits and knew the terrain intimately.

I used that knowledge to my advantage.
I would do what is called "still hunting".
That's hunting on the ground, moving very quietly into the wind. As quietly as ever you can.
And often stopping awhile in a likely spot.

You might move only 50 or 100 yards in an hour, listening all the time, because deer make noise too.
Particularly when they're eluding other hunters.
That's where other hunters can unintentionally help you. They drive the deer to you.
By their smell, oftentimes. Note the part about still hunting into the wind.

Just thought I'd give you a slightly different take on it. :)

    Good luck.

    Make friends with some farmers.
Offer to shoot their groundhogs, that's sure-fire.
    Around here, anyway.
