4wd Problem

When i engage 4wd and try to get up and go my truck bogs down and cuts off. If i do get goin and start spinnin the front i get a big puff of white smoke....WTH could be the problem? Thanks in advance!

 

Where is the smoke coming from? Front or back or exhaust pipe? Blue smoke indicates oil burning, white smoke might indicate water/coolant. Any smell associated with the smoke.

A clearer description would help to get a better picture of what is happening.

to me it looks as if it comes from the wheel wells and it has a very weird and awful smell i dont even know how to explain it.

and what i ment by that is when i can get all 4 wheels spinnin w/o it boggin down and stalling out then it starts to smoke. its only ever done it in sand cuz the first time it did it i just didt want to chance it messin up in the mud and leavin me stranded.

 

i will try and get a pic of it nxt time it does it, the smell almost smells like and electrical fire.

 

My advice? Reputable mechanic.. if you don't feel you can tackle the worst case scenarios yourself.

 

im thinkin the cv axles are worn out cuz im pretty sure they are still original.. but anyway it is almost like it is a complete loss of power. idk ill figure it out someday i reckon in the near future..

 

Your sure its not clutch smoke?

 

possibly i didnt think about that. but the clutch is pretty new, so why would it be boggin down and cuttin off though.

This was not on pavement was it? You do know to never use the 4wd on a grippy surface right? If you were to try and turn on pavement in 4wd it will be very jerky and if you really gas it, you could start to smoke the tires I guess.

Haha yea i know not to use 4wd on pavement, this was on a hill with really soft like beach sand but i did try it on a more packed dirt road to see if it would still bogg down and lose power and it doesnt. so to me it is only when traction is at a minimum that it bogs and either cuts off or smokes like hell.

 

you can turn 4x4 on on pavement all day and not get white smoke, that's nuts. i have no idea man, i'd bet something in the CVs

 

huh, thats wierd. I honestly have no idea what might be going on then.

 

i guess some weekend soon i will just tear down n see how bad the cv's are worn and i kow i gotta get new inner tie rods but that dont have nothin to do with this. trd7 has seen it do this b4 maybe he will chime in on what he thinks.

 

I'd bet on the clutch. They have a destinctive smell when they slip excessively. CV shafts would not produce smoke. A clutch would.

 

one question is this first time you've tried to use the 4wd in the truck ? like recent purchase or something? friend of mine bought a newer s10 and when he put in 4wd kept shuttering... found the PO had installed 4.56 gears in rear to make truck run better on street but never ponied up for front gears so it had 3 somethings up front

 

I think it might be the clutch
