What tires will I get?

I know another what should I get thread. Bare with me as I learn and try to spend my money as best possible.

Ok, here is the deal.

I have a set of 4 brand new still in the box 17 inch black 4Runner Pro rims to go on my 2017 MGM DCSB Sport, stock suspension.

Going with either 255/70/17 or 265/70/17

My plan is to hit up Labor Day sales and get these on the truck before snow flies. I will be off line for the next week or so, but when I get back this will be a priority.

What I am looking for-well priced, aggressive look, decent Highway but can handle logging roads, little mud and snow. Some might say I want it all, correct. Or at least as close to it as I can get.

Edit: What stuff do I need to pay attention to?

What are you seeing for Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. 265/65/R16?

 

Maine! DEFINITELY need sever weather rated unless you are going to run a dedicated snow tire separately.

I’ve had Falkens at3w and COOPER STT Maxx. Ran back and forth between Maine and Rhode Island for 18 months while living in Bath building a ship.

Falkens are SO MUCH better in the snow and also have a more comfortable rides. Get C-Rated and not SL/ P-metric if you’re running logging roads. Do not by E-rated.

On STTs now. Going back to Falkens next week.

 

If you want an everything tire... get Cooper ST Maxx. I beat the shit out of mine and they held up. Did great in Montana winters, Moab Utah wheeling, highway driving, etc. Heavy though!

I'm running cheaper Falkten AT3W right now. They've been good to me so far. Last winter wasn't as bad but the month we did get shitty they did well. Have not wheeled them like I did the Coopers though.

 

Learn to air down.

 

I've heard that Duratracs are great in winter/snow. And they look aggressive. However, I've never heard good things about puncture resistance from those who've taken them off the beaten path.

People like you amaze me - simply can’t resist saying something stupid, even when it doesn’t benefit the OP. One size doesn’t fit all. E-rated and airing down is not what the OP needs.

Our trucks are not heavy enough for E rated tires. Even heavily armored it’s still not heavy enough for E-rated tires. I do air down. I even have to run 30-32 psi on the street or the rear traction sucks in the rain.

A lot of people like E-rated tired because they can air down considerably and that’s ok. It’s even required for what some people do with their trucks. However, the OP stated use doesn’t indicate that he want to run 12psi and wheel his truck where max traction and puncture resistance is required.

Some people also buy E-rated because they are too cheap to spend the extra money on C-rated tires since they are considerably more expensive.

Others buy P-metric because they like a good ride and aren’t super heavy.

 

STTs are good tires. Falkens are better for where the OP lives. I know Montana gets a loot of snow too, but Maine doesn’t start snow removal until there is at least 18” on the ground. Falkens do better in the snow, period.

Duratracs sucked for me on ice.

I would encourage Falken AT3W or Cooper AT3 4S both standard load so they are softer and perform better. Both look aggressive for a p metric tire.

Nokian's all weather/all terrain tires suck, they wear like shit and are always noisy. I would only buy Hakkas from them.

My comment about learning to air down wasn't directed at the OP. It was directed at you. Also, can you show me where I told the OP to buy E-Rated tires?

You noted that you "even have to run 30-32 psi on the street" for rain traction. Are you one of those guys who fills your tires to the max PSI rating or something?

 

I’m not responding for your benefit. I could give two shits what you have to say. However, the OP is asking for advice and you’ve provided none. I have had both types of tires and have lived in the area he does. At the end of the day it is his choice. You however seem to be the 9000 post guy who contributes nothing but drama.

For psi, I run the door sticker when I can. Unfortunately an E-rated tire is not designed to run that low on tarmac so they don’t wear properly.

You’re comment to air down was a response to me suggesting he shy away from an E-rated tire. Cooper STTs don’t get their intended profile until about 40 psi which is way too stiff and rides like shit, even with $4K in custom tuned suspension.

 

You make a lot of assumptions in your posts in this thread.
