I guess you have to be the best selling and most iconic at ever sold by that company for parts to still be made after 50 plus years

Just depends on the manufacturer and model. There are plenty of aftermarket suspension suppliers to fill in any gaps for 1st gens at the moment. I've seen sales of OEM suspension components come to a virtual halt because the remaining owner base is all buying aftermarket shocks/struts and bushings. Yet there are parts like OEM strut boots that everybody continues to buy.

This all gets into supply chain management and contractual service level agreements between the manufacturer and the channel supply partner.

What I've seen on this is manufacturers and the large parts chains issue supply projections (based on current usage) to the channel partner/manager sometimes a year in advance. So think about having to project that your car/parts company will need to buy xxx number of MAFs for a given model in year 2021. So they enter a supply contract for specific numbers of parts. Then if the consumers (demand) cannot meet the supply an overage starts to occur within the channel. That causes the channel to start adjusting future orders numbers and liquidating the overage in some cases. I think there are cases where the supply channel partner has a number of OEM parts in inventory that will go to the manufactures distribution chain, and then a number of those parts will be distributed by the channel partner as one of their holding companies brands or to brands that are willing to pick up the item. It gives both channel partner and manufacturer a way to keep the volumes up to a level where the parts manufacturer will continue to produce the parts. Once that level drops below a certain level, the manufacturer may not be interested (e.g. contractually obligated) in tooling up to make a small run of a specific item. If a manufacturer chooses to keep a full set of parts available for a legacy product without regard to any type of predictable consumption, it would be an expense that is considered to be the cost of keeping owners with a legacy product happy. It all depends on the manufacturer and their commitment to the legacy product consumer. I can tell you that the many of the auto manufacturers usually don't give a RIP about legacy product owners especially when there is a new model of the legacy product sitting on showrooms.
