It is the one hang up but I'm also just fine doing that on the tailgate under an awning. Waiting 10 months for a Drifter or 1.5 years for a GFC is a long time just to stand up.
I keep two mtn bikes stored and locked in the back of the truck on trips so the plan isn't to have the bed be much of a living/working space anyway. I just want the low profile/drag and quick setup of a hard shell tent while keeping the storage and security options of a truck with a shell.

Is the tent material that GFC uses pretty good? I saw one big complaint thread about it but wondering if there's been any consensus on quality over time?

Yota, Is that an 270 AluCab awning? We love ours - makes the space seem so much more spacious!

There’s a couple GFC specific threads. You would probably have better luck asking specific GFC questions there. Just try and keep an open mind. More owners tend to hang out in these.

Yep, AluCab 270. I had a 2500 ARB off the side of my GFC, and while I really liked it this is so much easier to open and stow alone. With the ARB I really needed help opening and closing. And you’re right on the second morning it rained for a bit and you can still function and walk around/ make breakfast ext it was pretty cool. A 270 really makes camp nice!

This is what I have so far. You can see the diesel heater outlet on the right. The kitchen box is easy to remove, I prefer to cook outside, but can be used inside. The kitchen stays at home, ready to go. one solar panel on the roof with a Red Ark DC DC controller and 100 amp agm battery. The fridge placement makes it easy to get to from inside or out. Still working on how to utilize the wall space.

I bought a habitat, lead time was only 6 weeks. The wedge camper they make (summit) is only 14 weeks lead time. Whole lot less waiting and an awesome product.

I too went the GFC route (waiting) due to the price difference and the value adds. Few things, I am not driving a shiny huge topper on a Cement Taco which I have taken pains to black out and dial in the look I want. Add at least $1,100 to the drifter price for powder coat. I am also not paying $1,600 for front runner doors to get somewhat close to the access of the GFC. On top of this I am not packing around add. 75-100 pounds full time if I can avoid it. I also like the exterior mounting system of GFC. Being honest, I do wish GFC had a fan option and I would probably buy the insulation kit as well on the Drifter. But these aren’t deal breakers as they both can be added and with my long wait, I hope that at least the fan becomes an option.

I’m all about paying a premium for a quality product but when you compare the two options, I don’t feel the premium is worth it on the Drifter. Happy to read about everyone loving the Drifter though. Made it through over 100 pages within a few days on the Drifter thread.

Too each there own, I think the premium of the Drifter is definitely worth it for a leak proof robust design.

And yes I am getting the Front Runner doors also, the FR doors seem to have a smaller opening than the GFC but are actually bigger since no frame is blocking the opening of the door.

Plus don't have to deal leaks or doors breaking off with FR.

As far as I’m concerned, the less doors & windows the better. Less things to potentially go wrong. I’ve got an awning if I need more shade and it’s much more than opening a door will ever provide.

I somewhat agree but climbing from the very back to the very front to get something sucks.

Eeek that sucks. Hope GFC has a fix for that. Looks like GFC started their own forum. Hopefully that means they could respond to their customers because they kinda went AWOL after such a huge launch on TW. Got folks excited and then just ghosted.

The doors aren’t really for shade so much as accessibility to the camper. Makes life much easier when grabbing something real quick and not having to open swingouts and tailgate and whatnot. Just reach in and done.

What about FWC’s “Project M” shell camper? Looks like an interesting addition to the market.

What suspension upgrade/s did you do to accommodate the weight of your wedge? Specifically leaf springs and shocks. I'm in the market for a GFC/Vagabond/SnapTreehouse/Alu-Cab and I only want to have to upgrade expensive bits of the undercarriage once. I'll be attending Overland Expo East in October and I know that GFC, Snap Treehouse and Alu-Cab will have reps there. Anybody with a Vagabond showing up? I'll trade you a cold six pack of cheap American beer for a walk-thru. Seriously though, what are your springs/leafs/shocks? The Alu-Cab comes in about 500lb and the GFC about 275/300. The others are in between that. That's about half my payload in my Tacoma. I'm thinking heavy duty Dakars or Deavers at the very least. Thanks.
