hit the Merced River outside Snelling for some fishing/fun yesterday

    20190824_194645.jpg 20190824_194736.jpg part0.jpg part0(1).jpg part0(2).jpg IMG_0891.jpg

got dark so started heading out around 830pm. on the way out we heard what was either a cat or a girl screaming up river. i turned the truck off and was able to yell and hear 2 girls screaming for help. took off running through the black berry bushes/vegetation. about 1/4 mile up river i found 2 18 year old girls crying for help. they were floating down the river earlier that day when their inflatable raft popped. the girls had no idea where they were and walked around for 6 hours trying to find a road or people with no luck. both exhausted and dehydrated. 1 girl had an injured ankle, was shivering, light headed and nauseous. put my shirt on her to warm her up a bit. The girls were able to get enough signal to call Merced County Sheriffs Office and let them know they were lost along the river (ended up losing signal at some point). Merced County Sheriffs deputies started trying to search and requested the CHP heli (it had to fly back to fresno to refuel first though so it would be a while before they could get back to the area and begin searching). After i located them and they told me dispatch knew they were lost, i called dispatch back and told them i located the girls and i was getting ready to get them back to our trucks to meet the deputies at the top of the trail. Had to piggyback carry the injured girl about 1/4 mile back to our vehicles. loaded her into another truck and told him to get her to the top. after about 10 minutes i could still hear his truck so i started running on the trail to see what happened. he got stuck in some slick loose river rock. injured girl was passed out in front seat so i attempted to wake her up, wasnt responding. Had to do a sternum rub for her to be somewhat responsive. i knew i wouldnt be able to carry her the rest of the way to the road so i ran to the top of the trail and brought back the deputies and EMS. She was loaded onto a board and put in the bed of another tacoma. took about 3 hours from the time we heard them until they time they were in the ambulance. INSANE night but im glad we were out there to help. I'm pretty much immobile today.. ended up with tons of cuts/thorns from all the vegetation, tore my back and knee up carrying her out of there, but 100% worth it

It’s a fun river. If you’re making a day of it, I recommend wading up and down the bank to find the deep pools/cover. I have the most luck this time of year on smaller hard plastics like rapalas and poppers (hooks have to be barbless). Lots of action if you can find them.
