To the OP, I recently compounded my '00 SR5 and, yes, I can confirm that it is single-stage paint. I had to wash my buffing towels about six times because they got so clogged up with red paint.
On the bright side, the paint turned out great even though it was a ton of work. The trick now is to keep up with it and preventing sunfade... because as already stated in this thread, red paint fades fast.

both single stage and base/clear are good.

Single stage tends to fade and lose its lustre over time, meaning you have to polish it from time to time if you want it to stay looking good, but if you want minimal maintenance, go with base/clear

do you attribute that peeling to the hot AZ sun? or was it defective paint to begin with

I thought that my color is black metallic but now i am not sure lol
its seen a fair amount of sun in its days but probably not the constant intense heat that AZ has
also it has seen plenty of winter road spray on the sides, hood, etc. ... i 'try' to get it washed off within the week

i need to give and get mine a very very good buff, ... cannot let you be outdoing me :hattip:
the sun is even 'more intense' at higher altitudes i think
and i always thought i had a clear coat paint :notsure:

i would certainly try to get that taken care of if possible, metal is somewhat thin up there i think and will perforate eventually
i had some oxidation starting back by my rear tailights with plastic bedliner bare steel rub that i had to get taken care of

isn't the metal on the roof of a different thickness than the rear pickup box?

i must have clear coat then, it usually develops a thin oxidized layer and every once in awhile I just use some paste to de-oxidize it but I can probably do even more, my arms get very tired after about halfway through usually :(

I'd guess it's a little of both. I'd lean toward defective paint because of the failing clear on the inside of the door. That should never happen. I see several around town that look the same. The truck has spent most of its life at altitudes around 6000 ft. with plenty of snow and ice in winter too so you could also factor that in. I parked it in a garage most of the time but I guess that didn't help much.

5742CBC2-1D71-4322-869D-FD6FC7BBE86A.jpg I’m by no means a paint and body expert. But I do believe my 03 is base coat clear coat. When I purchased this truck a couple months ago it has a haze look to it. I know that it has not been waxed in years. Just a basic wash. And sat outside. When I buffed on the paint with compound, my pads did not turn red. But sure came out nice. The right rear fender had been repaired at some point and they clear coated it. I know this because they did a less then adequate job, clear coating over scratches and chips. I too stripped my truck of ALL stickers and emblems. I like the sterile look. Plus it’s easier to wax and clean

My clear is coming off my hood. Is this something that can be fixed before it hurts the paint underneath?
