How is your 3rd gen holding up?

Got 13k on my '19 and no problems as of yet. Almost due for another oil change.

 

17,xxx on my 2017 Trd Sport 4x4 auto and only issue was I had to get the battery replaced due to a bad cell about a few months ago or so... It was under warranty/no charge.

 

The creaky clutch pedal is the only issue with mine at 26k but man, it's annoying. I know some folks have had the dealer fix it but sounds like it just happens again. Is there a write up somewhere on here that shows how to properly grease the clutch assembly? I'm assuming it needs to be taken apart in order to do so.

 

Have a picture that is floating around the internet with a guy who has almost 250k miles on his 3rd Gen. Rough math for oldest possible age would be 2016 model year bought it 2015 which would put it at 62k+ miles per year which is an insane amount of miles.

 

I’d have to find it and repost it, but no disassembly required. Just reach up behind the pedal with a little grease and apply. I’ll try and find some pictures, but basically each end of the spring, one with a plastic retainer piece and the other a metal bracket it clips into. Then a little on the guide rod and rubber bushing.

20k on mine and I gave up hoping for a reasonably refined ride. The truck works like I need it to, but clutch groan, rear diff weeps and makes a lovely hiss above 35. Rear slider window rattles when open, which is fine, because its usually closed so I don't hear the diff. I've also got a rattle when I'm in neutral and hit any imperfection in the road (MT issue). It is what it is.

 

Every MT 4wd Tacoma has rattled in neutral over bumps. A little unrefined but related to design. My 1st and 2nd gen did it, and I put over half a million miles on those 2. The clutch lubrication should fix the groan.

 

51K on my 2017 SR5. MPG=22-24 hwy, 18 town. Second SR5 I've owned. First a 2002. Sold it at 250K no problems. The 2017 is a great rig just have to deal with the stall at times at intersection and the infrequent bowling ball hitting the back of the cab at stops? The 4wd works flawlessly and I use it frequently on the beach.

37k on a '17 TRD Off-Road 4x4 bought new in January of '18. So far just basic maintenance, but we do have a leaky lower ball joint boot, so I'll be replacing that soon. We've made a few camping trips to Big Bend, and two 9+ day camping/'wheeling trips to CO. I had no opinion of Tacomas in general when we bought it; I love the truck now.

2016 TRDOR auto with 32k. No problems had The tranny TSBs done. Been great so far.

I had the roughness in the drivetrain issue around 7-15 mph since it was new but Toyota wouldn’t do anything about it. When I replaced the springs I installed a 3* shim and it went away. I think most people attribute it to the brakes but I think the pinion angle is too steep on the ORs and PROs.

 

A shutter like a bowling ball hitting the back of the cab. Happens infrequently and I believe its something to do with a pressure build up in the drive train? But yes I had Stall TSB done. BTW, got the A/C motor replaced on recall.

 

When you have foot off gas and decelerating?

 

No, when I go to brake at a light. Weird and no I don't have a bowling ball rolling around in the back of the bed I recall others here documenting this issue a ways back?

 

Yes. Axle wrap cones to mind but i am not a mechanic

 

55k down on my 17 OR.... Perhaps the last time I'll buy a "new" Toyota and definitely the last time I'll buy an early model of a new refresh since the early Tacos seemed like an expensive, public beta release vs. something that was ready for the market. I enjoy the truck and take it everywhere so I'm not a "turd gen" type. I love the truck they designed, how it was executed / assembled in my case was very frustrating and reduced my opinion of the initial quality of a Toyota from the graces of decades past...

Replaced CPS (on my own)
Truck has been serviced for seeping diff TWICE
Replaced HVAC blower motor due to recall
Replaced high pressure fuel pump that sounded like schizophrenic mice when at idle....
Warped drum
Failed battery <1yr into ownership (replaced with a 5yr warranty deep cell)
Multiple transmission calibrations... the latest being at least "OK" but still not great from a shifting standpoint without aftermarket tools / tunes
Now on my 4th windshield in less than 3 years of ownership... I've only replaced one windshield in the previous 25 years of driving all over the country before this truck
Diff howl TSB... helped some, still get some whine in certain ranges though
Transmission .75qt low from the factory causing clunks and hard shifting

And a few other things like the whistling in the control arms, etc., but luckily have NOT had any issues with the leaky 3rd brake light which is a miracle b/c most other issues that plagued the early 17s, my truck had. It was the epitome of a "Friday Truck" with corners cut in assembly (like, so many things were barely hand tight... like U-bolts and chassis stuff, stickers on ridiculously crooked in the interior, just silly stuff that should have been caught either in assembly, the port, or from my dealer when they did their "checklist")

I love the truck despite all of this.

They did design a very practical, capable midsized pickup but were hampered by poor quality control in assembly and quality control of their suppliers particularly in the first year or 2 of 3rd gen production. There are certainly some 16s and early 17s out there that have NOT had these issues, but there were also many that had similar experience as mine....

While the truck is running fine now, there's always that voice in the back of my head that leads me to think many of the issues I had in the first year laid a path to premature wear and tear on the drive train, but bought the warranty until 100k miles so I'll probably run that out and trade it out before that's a financial concern I'll have to deal with.

 

The symptoms mine had was under light to moderate braking the truck would have a vibration...felt like warped front rotors if you've ever experienced that. But it was a brand new truck, so I was 99.99% sure the front rotors were not the issue. Under heavy breaking the truck felt fine, I think because brake force distribution shifts more of the stopping power to the front brakes. It was explained to me that Toyota got a bad batch of axles from their supplier, they weren't made correctly and it causes the rear drums to wobble. To test for this issue, try pulling up gently on the e-brake while driving at 35 or so MPH and see if you feel the pulsing or vibration coming from the rear brakes.

2019 TRD OR 15k miles... the truck left me stranded August 15th and I had to get it towed to the dealer. Apparently ,it's happening to a couple of Tacos. Turns out it's a faulty fuel pump that's on backorder. Got an update today and hopefully picking it up this Thursday.

Wondering if it'll be okay after this or if I should jump ship and get another vehicle. ALLLLLL the warning lights were going off when it happened.
