It's time to sell off my beloved and heavily modded 2010 with 180k miles and replace it with a 2020 Taco (yeah CarPlay). I'm currently running General Grabber AT-2 tires and they have served me extremely well on the trails and in the Minnesota winters, they are smooth riding on the highway, and have worn nicely. We will likely be relocating to Texas this spring, and I'm looking for something more suited to southern winters which is mud, not snow.

Should I shop for a set of ATs and just accept they won't perform as well in the mud, or should I consider at a set of mud tires that don't sound like a tractor rolling down the highway? Any suggestions?

It'll be the DFW area, leaning towards Denton or some other area on the west side considering my requirement of access to a 1000+ yard rifle range.

Honestly depends on wether you can stand the howl. Cuz your not gonna find a true MT that doesn’t howl.

Are there recommendations for less noise than others? I realize these are opposing objectives... quiet and good in mud.

Nice, welcome! I'm in DFW area as well, about 15 miles south of Denton. Denton is cool and expanding like crazy. The whole DFW area is expanding since I've been out here.

Some are louder than others though. I had some random offbrand mud tires before I got the ones I have now and they were pretty loud. I'm running Ironman now (still an offbrand, but better than what I had before lol) The Ironman mud terrains balanced perfectly and are wearing a lot more evenly than my last set of tires and they are much quieter.

I was on the same quest as you and couldn’t get a definitive answer. Some were like “these are quiet but don’t last long” or “these are quiet but aren’t that great in mud” I ended up deciding to just go with a higher quality tire that will perform in the mud but also last a long time. My choice is Cooper STT Pro’s

Seeing how we don't get snow in the DFW area, I would recommend a tire that performs best in ice during the winter. The icy roads are no joke down here.

Also I don’t get ice but maybe one day of the year down here (no joke) so winter weather tire qualities are not a concern for me

I’ve lived in the winterlands most of my life and the few years I was in Texas was at Ft. Hood as infantry. I remember those infrequent TX ice storms.

Probably the most aggressive looking AT I've found is the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT. Good manners and quiet but quite aggressive sidewall.

I’ll make sure to stay 1000 yards away and zigzag at all times.
