Hey all, I've searched but haven't found anything speaking specifically to this.

I'm looking for an effective way/product to remove the Toyota applied CRC coating from my frame so I can paint.

So far I've been using a chisel to scrape it off. That works in the mechanical sense, but I'm looking to remove the remaining residue as well. Just wondering if anyone else has attempted this and what worked for them.

    Thanks,

    Jon

Dang, that sounds like quite a task!

    Have you tried paint remover?

Haven't tried anything yet, but that might be an idea.

I read somewhere else that all that will remove it is solvents. To be honest, I'm rather pissed that I need to do this at all. SOB's made a mess that has rust underneath it.

    Good times.

What about a stripping wheel on an angle grinder? That will chew through just about anything but the metal...

Took me about 20 plus hours for mine. Used a grinding wheel and various wire brushes. Wear a respirator the dust and paint gets everywhere

I couldnt imagine taking mine off. I just fluid film on top of it to keep it nice and wet. The stuff was designed to prevent rust on a clean, rust free frame. Looks like my frame was pretty clean when it was applied as I havent run into any issues of major rust hiding under the crc.

If it was me I would Sand Blast or the media of your choice .

Any other way is going to take so very long.

You might try Gasket stripper although some brands seem to work better then others .

It tends to loosen things to where it can be wiped off.

A air powered Gasket scraper sometimes works

Thanks for all the insight guys. I'll probably go the stripping wheel on the grinder route, and also use the wire brush attachment for certain areas.

Blue92, I don't think I can leave mine on. It's got rust 'under' it in some areas that need to be addressed. Wish it was all sound paint. But it isn't. Lucky for me, the metal is still sound though. So, I gotta get busy.

Did they apply this stuff inside the frame rails too? That’s the most critical area anyway.

Could try and needle scaler too just not inside the frame rails, I dunno how that could be cleaned up...

They used a white colored waxy looking stuff on the inside of mine. Looks like its done a good job as from what I can see, it looks pretty clean in there.

How do you sand blast the frame while the cab and everything is still on there?

do you have any close up pics of the white colored waxy stuff?

I was not aware that NC was a cold climate state to have the need for all of that?

i am trying to figure it out as i go!
once I figure out how I am going to get the rear pickup box off by myself to reach the hard to reach spots way up under there.
the front under the cab/engine compartment can 'probably' be done with the other method(s) :notsure:

Not exactly to get a pic through the tiny frame holes lol. Just imagine a white film on the inside with the consistency of paraffin wax.

NC is usually ok aside from the beach or mountains. My truck is from VA, which is a cold climate state per Toyota.

Sorry I haven't been back to the thread. Just wanted to report back that it seems that mineral spirits works pretty well at removing the CRC crap.

Starting by scraping it off with a putty knife, chisel, scraper etc and then wiping at it with a rag 'soaked' (literally dripping) with the mineral spirits seems to get rid of it pretty effectively.

ok thanks, then you probably don't have to worry about any of the defective paint peeling on the inside!
but you don't know if they sprayed it all over on the inside or just the bottom area?

i was just wanting a pic to see if somebody locally here in the midwest might recommend me to do this... too many are clueless around the sticks here lol
